Sheriff McQuaige – The Old West

Sheriff McQuaige is part of the OW11/6 Town Toughs & Staunch Defenders pack.

As the Sheriff is wearing a suit, as well as carrying a shotgun, he could be used in Victorian Science Fiction scenarios. He certainly could be walking the streets of London as well as the dusty tracks of the old west.

I based the model on a two pence piece. You can originally see that I had based the model on a penny, but I couldn’t work out how to get it off the coin easily without damaging the model. Ah the power of superglue.

Malto Cortese – Tally Ho!

Malto Cortese is a really nice sculptured model and quite different to the other miniatures in the A League of Exceptional Gentleman – DA012 range.

I think this will be a really useful model for Victorian Science Fiction scenarios, he looks like a Steam Tank or Ether Flyer Captain rather than a Darkest Africa explorer. His expression of determination really comes out in the model and he looks like an individual who you wouldn’t want to cross.

I don’t know if I will give him a blue uniform, I might go for more of a desert khaki look instead.

1914 British Infantry

I have four metal models from this range that I bought some time ago, not sure if that was the only ones I bought or if I have merely mislaid and lost the others…. I thought I had ten, but there are only four.

I gave the models a white undercoat. Here is one of the models, an infantryman advancing.

I will give the models a base coat of khaki next.

I have been thinking about how I might use the models once I have finished painting them. I did think they would work well in a Victorian Science Fiction Scenario alongside my Steam Tank.

Another idea was to use them in a Doctor Who scenario fighting the Robot Mummies or the Cybermen. They are almost the right era for the Robot Mummies and would make for an interesting pre-UNIT or even Torchwood scenario.

HMS King John, Ruler Class Battleship

I gave the HMS King John, Ruler Class Battleship for Dystopian Wars a basecoat of Citadel Base: Mechanicus Standard Grey.

What I have been finding is that my painting is not covering the model and I am not sure if it is my painting (in other words my eyesight) or whether it’s the paint shrinking. Looking over the model I think it might need a bit of a second coat.

Undercoating the Hussars

These three Hussar Class Gunships are reinforcements for my Prussians in Dystopian Wars. After constructing the models I gave them a white undercoat.

I then, using a hot glue gun, stuck them to some old paint pots for painting.

King John – Ruler Class Battleship

I finished painting King Richard III and used it in a few games. The first of my reinforcements for my Kingdom of Britannia naval forces is another Ruler Class Battleship, called King John. Having constructed the model I gave it a white undercoat.

Unlike my other Battleship, this one only has three turrets, but does have a shield generator.

As I have said in previous posts I am not a huge fan of the Kingdom of Britannia ship designs, say compared to the FSA or the Prussian Empire. I just imagined them to be sleeker and more menacing. The Prussians certainly have that kind of look.

SMS Scharnhorst

I have started to paint the second of my Spartan Games Prussian Empire Dreadnoughts.

I finished the first, SMS Blücher and will be painting this model in a similar fashion. I decided early on to use the same turret layout as my first Dreadnought and not use generators. I did wash the model first to remove any mould lubricant.

I then gave the model a white undercoat using Citadel Skull White spray.

I also affixed the model to an old plastic blister using a hot glue gun to make it easier to paint.

I’ve named this ship, SMS Scharnhorst, after Gerhard von Scharnhorst, he was Chief of the Prussian General Staff, noted for his writings, his reform of the Prussian army and his leadership during the Napoleonic Wars. Blücher who was an army Field Marshall, is whom the Blücher class Dreadnoughts are named after, I have decided that the first of my dreadnoughts will be the SMS Blücher. Generally ships in the same class are named in a similar vein, so the first of the class is the SMS Blücher, this dreadnought will also be named after an army general, in this case Scharnhorst.

Undercoating the Prussian Bunker

Having washed the Prussian Bunker for Dsytopian Wars, I stuck in the turrets and gave the model a white undercoat using a can of Citadel Skull White.

The next stage will be either a black interior, or a grey basecoat over the whole model.

Kingdom of Britannia Terrier Ironclad

Striking a balance between speed, durability and firepower, the Terrier Ironclad is the perfect expansion to a Kingdom of Britannia force. Able to engage any opponent whilst weathering all but the heaviest attacks, the Terrier provides a steadfast iron anchor for the Britannian gun line. Any foe foolish enough to approach the Terrier head on will be blasted by its relentless 122-Pdr Gun, whilst the sponson mounted AT Rifles deter any attempted flanking assaults. As well as this devastating array of firepower, the Terrier holds a powerful shield generator within its hull – a sparking energy field to disrupt incoming fire.

I quite like this new model from Spartan Games for their Dystopian Legions game. It appears from the CAD diagram to have a lot of detail. Though Dystopian Legions uses extra large 28mm figures, this would appear to be not too scale specific so would fit in with 25mm figures quite easily.

Victorian Science Fiction Steam Tank

Here is my Victorian Science Fiction Steam Tank from Ironclad Miniatures from a recent game.

Alongside them are some Foundry Darkest Africa miniatures from Simon’s collection.

We didn’t use the steam tank as a model in the game, merely as scenery.

I am thinking about how I can create rules for the steam tank for the Legends of the Old West rules. I have been looking at the tank rules in The Great War rules and I think that they could work with a little work. My main concern is that the weapons usually found in the old west probably weren’t able to do much damage to a VSF steam tank and therefore as well as rules for the steam tank, I also need to think about some steampunk weapons for those fighting against the steam tank.

Though I am sure an Elephant Gun might be able to do some damage…
