Forge World Newsletter #147

new aerial game coming soon…

++++ MESSAGE BEGINS ++++

It’s been a few weeks since our last Forge World Newsletter and for that I apologise. We’ve been to six events in three different countries over the past number of weeks so I haven’t been around that much! It won’t be long till we’re off out again as Forge World will be at three more big events in the UK, USA and Germany in the near future. More details on each of these shows below.
As to new models and things to look forward to, we have news and details on some new pieces of 40K Cities of Death scenery and a new kind of Tau Drone too. But of course our main news item is Forge World’s forthcoming game, ‘Aeronautica Imperialis’, read on!
Thx,

Ewen Little,
Forge World.

‘Aeronautica Imperialis’
So what is it then? ‘Aeronautica Imperialis’ is the name of our new game of aerial combat in the 41st millenium currently in development. It is a complete, stand alone game using the existing Forge World Epic 40,000 aircraft range, with additional new models we are now working on. ‘Aeronautica Imperialis’ is far more than just dog-fighting; there will be bombing missions, intercept sorties, troop insertions and extractions, strike missions, as well as pure air-to-air, fighter-vs-fighter combat. ‘Aeronautica Imperialis’ will be a large format hardback book, containing all the rules, aircraft datasheets, manouvere cards and scenarios needed to play the game. Of course there will be lots of background information on each of the aircraft in this big book, as well as many colour profiles and ‘photos’ of them locked in deadly combat. Imperial Navy players will be able to fly missions using Thunderbolts, Lightnings, Marauders and Marauder Destroyers. Imperial Space Marines provide some heavy support with their huge Thunderhawk Gunships and Transporters while facing off against the fighters and bombers of the Tau, Eldar, Orks and Chaos. We’ve also designed a new plastic flying base for the aircraft to use that cleverly shows arcs of fire as well as keeping track of the speed and altitude too. I’ve watched quite a few games now and played a couple during play-testing and I really enjoyed it. Each of the different airforces do have their own ‘character’ and have to be used in quite different ways. Just don’t let an Ork Fighta get up close behind you is all I can say! ‘Aeronautica Imperialis’ should be released later this year and we promise to keep everyone up to date with it’s progress via the Forge World Newsletter.

Tau DX-4 Technical Drones

Here’s a characterful little addition to the Tau forces; DX-4 Technical Drones. Designed by Mark Bedford, these new Drones can easily be used in Cities of Death games to mark the Tau Observation Point or Medicae facility Stratagems. Another idea is to use them to represent Tau Infantry Wargear. Place one or two Technical Drones alongside a Tau Battlesuit with hardwired wargear to show the addition of its’ Blacksun Filter, Drone Controller, Multi-Tracker or Target Lock. It has also been suggested that attaching them to squads of Tau infantry would nicely help mark the unit as Combat Engineers. Really, uses for the DX-4 Technical Drones are as many and varied as your imagination. Packs of two DX-4 Technical Drones will be released from week commencing July 31st and are avaliable to pre-order right now.

Cities of Death – Power Generator
You may have noticed that a new section appeared within the Forge World online store about two weeks ago, a section dedicated to Cities of Death. We looked through the new book and our range of models together to find models and kits that would best represent as many of the Stratagems as possible. A couple of pieces we noticed that would work really nicely to make the Power Generator or Imperial Observation Point Stratagems were this generator we made for our Anphelion Project range and the Cadian Scanner from the Command HQ Squad released a few weeks ago. Both these models are available to pre-order now and are scheduled for release from Monday July 31st onwards.
Need a Power Generator..?

The War and Peace Show 2006

Held every year at The Hop Farm down in Beltring, Kent, The War and Peace Show is the world’s largest military vehicle and collectors fair. With over 3000 military vehicles on display, from Jeeps all the way up to 60 ton tanks, living history re-enactors, massive arena events and over 1000 trade stalls, there is a HUGE amount to see and do at this 5 day show. The fun starts on Wednesday July 19th and carries on until the evening on Sunday July 23rd. It goes without saying that Forge World will be there again this year. We have a large tent that we will be stuffing full of stock and display models as well as our very own tank that will be sitting right outside. That’s right, we will be taking our 1/6th scale radio controlled Baneblade with us and it will be rumbling around throughout the week and right through the weekend. Come and have a good look at the biggest and heaviest Forge World model ever made. If you would like us to bring down an order for you to collect at this show, just give us a call and we’ll help make it happen.
Want to go but need more info..?

Games Day Chicago and Games Day Germany

Saturday July 29th will see me over in the USA for Games Day Chicago and just a few days later, I will be thundering off over to Cologne for Games Day Germany on Sunday August 6th. If you are going to be coming to either of these very busy shows and want to buy some Forge World models, I really can recommend placing a reservation order.

Ork Gunwagon

Having cleaned the parts I started to try dry runs and then sticking the track units together.

The track units went very easily together though did requires some cleaning and they did have some large chunks of superfluous resin. The tracks went on easily and are separate from the wheels.

They came together nicely.

I then stuck the gun shield and the engine block to the main structure. I used epoxy resin for this as superglue wouldn’t be strong enough as the resin filled in the slight gaps between the parts.

I then stuck the two tracked sections to each side and the exhausts.

Next stage is the undercoat.

Forgeworld Ork Gunwagon Kannon

See my previous post on the Kannon, having cleaned the parts, they were ready to be stuck together.

The actual Kannon model does go together quite nicely.

I did stick the Kannon together and intially I did include the base which in fact isn’t required when using the Kannon with the GunWagon, and this isn’t clear on the instructions.

I undercoated the Kannon with a black undercoat.

I have also been working on the Gunwagon itself.

Grey Knights Dreadnought

One excellent birthday present I had was a Grey Knights Dreadnought from Forgeworld. This is a fantastically detailed model, with lots of engravings, purity seals

These are the parts that you get.

You can see the detail on this close-up.

This is another view of the parts this time with the bits that you need to cut off highlighted.

These are the cleaned parts.

One of the issues I had with the model was the large piece of superfluous resin on the back which I literally had to hack off.

This was no small piece of sprue this was a large chunk of resin.

Next stage is to stick the thing together (and order some arms).

++++ MESSAGE BEGINS ++++

Just back a couple of days after seeing a whole pile of you at Games Day Baltimore and off I zoom again! The next few weekends will see Forge World in Glasgow, Toronto, Manchester and London. Details on what we will be doing and where follow below, so see if you can come along to one of these events. But what have we got to show you in today’s Forge World Newsletter? How about a super-detailed Venerable Dreadnought for the Black Templars? Then we have a new Cadian Command HQ squad to take a look at and the re-issue of one of our favourite older models.
Thx,

Ewen Little,
Forge World.

New Tau Piranha TX-42
Before all those we just have to look at this gorgeous new Tau Piranha variant designed by Daren Parrwood. The TX-42 is the latest development of the successful Piranha light skimmer that has a re-worked crew compartment and upgraded armament to turn it into a heavier gunship, designed for frontline operations in support of Tau armoured units. Warwick has written a set of experimental rules for the TX-42 that can be found in the ‘Downloads’ section of the Forge World website. Woo-hoo! Twin linked Rail Rifles and a Targeting Array! Also, I like the look of this new model SO much that my Eldar army is starting to get jealous. The Piranha TX-42 is available as either a conversion kit for the plastic Piranha, or as a complete resin and plastic kit ready to assemble. Both kits come with ALL the weapons options, twin-linked Fusion Blasters, Missile Pods, Plasma Rifles and Rail Rifles which will leave LOADS of cool parts for conversions afterwards. The two Piranha TX-42 kits are available to pre-order online at the Forge World online store now, scheduled for release from Tuesday May 30th onwards.

Amazing New Black Templars Venerable Dreadnought
There can be absolutely no doubt whatsoever that this is a Venerable Black Templars Dreadnought. In fact it could hardly be more venerable! Will Hayes’s original Mk4 Dreadnought has pretty much disappeared under all the extra work that Simon Egan has put in to create this bio-mechanical masterpiece. Just the banner pole is a gorgeous model in itself, but when you take a little bit of time to take a really good look at the model, you have to admit this is a damned nice model, regardless of what you collect. This lovely model of a Black Templars Venerable Dreadnought is available to pre-order online at the Forge World online store now and is due for release from Tuesday May 30th.

New Cadian Command HQ plus Scanner

Cadian Command HQ plus Scanner

Our stream of Cadian upgrades and reinforcements continues today as we unveil an all new Cadian Command HQ Squad plus Long Range Scanner. The complete resin set includes an excellent new Cadian officer model armed with a power fist using the master-vox on the back of one of the Cadian Guardsmen. There is also a new Guardsman armed with a melta-gun to provide a little bit of extra firepower where it’s needed most and a Guardsman sentry. I particularly like the Cadian operating the Long Range Scanner, with his users’ manual in his other hand! The rules for using Long Range Scanners in games of Warhammer 40,000 can be found in the ‘Downloads’ section of the Forge World website. Try them out and see what you think. The Cadian Command HQ Squad with Scanner is available to pre-order online at the Forge World online store now, scheduled for release from Tuesday May 30th onwards.

Re-release – Showcase Imperial Space Marine
One of the very first models that Forge World released, back in the dim and distant past when dinosaurs walked the earth, was a large scale Imperial Space Marine, the first in our Showcase series of figurines. Standing at an impressive 6 inches/150mm tall, even now this is one of my favourite models. I have bought one of these big models already and it is sitting on my painting/modelling desk at home: I just need to finish off the complicated Legion of the Damned paint scheme I chose. As you can see from the assembly instructions, the model comes in quite a number of pieces which allows for plenty of scope for modelling and personalisation. We have a limited number of the Showcase Imperial Space Marine available to order right now but we cannot predict when this set of moulds will break down so if you really fancy getting hold of one, please order soon to avoid disappointment.
