Space Marine Assault Squad

Space Marines who excel in the fury of close combat are organised into Assault squads and equipped with jump packs that allow them to take the fight to the enemy in brutal close-quarter fighting. Armed with a mixture of pistols and swords, they are terrifying foes in battle, dropping from above like flaming angels of death.

Space Marine Assault Squad

I was given a box of the Space Marine Assault Squad by my son, after thinking about painting them as Grey Knights I decided in the end to paint them as “normal” Marines. I wanted the bases to be different so made use of the resin pieces I had got from various basing kits and from the Mines, Bombs and Booby Traps box.

Space Marine Assault Squad bases

The plastic models look relatively simple to construct, but I always seem to get caught out sticking on the arms and shoulder pads with GW Space Marines.

First stage was fixing the legs to the torso.

I then made up the jetpacks.

These were then affixed to the Marine bodies.

I do like the beaky helmets, problem for nostalgic reasons… pity you only get one in the box.

…and a little bit more.

Paint disaster aside, I spent some time painting a little bit more of my Ork Stompa.

Here are the feet.

The main problem with the paint was twofold. The first problem was with my Citadel foundation paints they were quite old and had dried out. Second problem was with my Citadel washes, which had gone weird and no amount of mixing could sort them out.

Valkyrie Flyer of the Imperial Navy, on display at Warhammer World.

I do think that this was one of the best concepts ever produced by Forge World, and obviously with the release of the plastic kit version, made it much more accessible.

I like the execution of the concept, it isn’t a helicopter without rotors that you sometimes see with SF flyers, likewise it doesn’t look like a transport plane with short wings! I do have one of the plastic kits, but alas still in the box. Maybe time to get out the craft knife and the glue.

Ultramarines Life Size Rhino

Just outside Warhammer World in the car park is the full size Rhino that was originally used as a promotional piece for the THQ Dawn of War video game.

THQ gave the Rhino to Games Workshop who then gave it a repaint in Ultramarines colours.

Typhon Heavy Siege Tank

Space Marine Typhon Heavy Siege Tank

I see from the Forge World previews for GamesDay 2012 that they are going to be releasing a new tank based on the original Land Raider.

Space Marine Typhon Heavy Siege Tank

The Typhon Heavy Siege Tank was named after the ‘Great Beast’ of Ancient Terran myth, this immense siege tank was developed by the Mechanicum alongside the Spartan, with which it shares a basic chassis design.

The Typhon’s primary armament is the massive Dreadhammer cannon, and was created in response to a request from the Primarch Peturabo, master of the Iron Warriors. He demanded a Legiones Astartes war engine that could rival the great batteries of the Imperial Crusade Army in firepower, but manoeuvre and deploy at the speed of a Space Marine force.

Very nice looking tank.

Scimitar Pattern Space Marine Legion Jetbike

I see from the Forge World previews for GamesDay 2012 that they are going to be releasing some Space Marine jetbikes.

They do look interesting models, but I am not sure if I like them.

They seem more like space ship models than bikes.

Games Workshop does an App

Warhammer 40,000: Psychic Powers brings the psychic devastation of the 41st Millennium to your iPhone or iPod touch.

This month Games Workshop launches its first ever app exclusively through the App Store for your iPhone and iPod touch.

Warhammer 40,000: Psychic Powers brings the psychic devastation of the 41st Millennium to your iPhone or iPod touch. With this app, you’ll be able to browse through all the psychic disciplines and powers from the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook, and keep track of psychic powers during your Warhammer 40,000 battles.

You can also photograph and name your Psykers, generate powers for each Psyker before the game, and even listen to the sounds of arcing bio-lightning and the screams of the dying as you manifest psychic powers. Of course this is not a game in its own right.

You will need a copy of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook and the codex for your army in order to use this app.

So as an app to support playing the game, I personally thought £7.99 ($11.99) was a lot of money for a gaming aid. It’s a pity there isn’t a game within the app too that could be played when you are not playing Warhammer 40000.

Airfix Supacat Coyote and Jackal

Airfix preview video for A06302 Supacat Coyote A05301 Supacat Jackal.

You may recall from a previous blog post that I thought they would make for really nice Imperial Guard armoured vehicles. As they are 1/48th scale they would fit very well with the 25/28mm size of the Imperial Guard. Of course with some ramshackle additions they would also make for some really nice Ork vehicles too.
