Crazy Ivan for real…

The future is assault submarines and the future is now…

If you look deep into my website you can find references to a set of rules I started writing called Crazy Ivan, which was a set of near-future submarine rules.

I never really got them finished (maybe I should create a wiki for them).

However I was reading The Register and found this wonderful article about how the US Navy is converting old Trident subs into troop (frogmen) carrying assault subs.

The rebuilt vessels can nowadays carry 66 elite special-forces frogmen, who will typically be Navy SEALs or possibly members of the new US Marines MARSOC outfit. Some reports suggest that up to 102 underwater warriors may be able to cram in for short periods. The subs will have a “dry hangar”, an underwater docking bay allowing the frogmen to deploy from their mother ship aboard SEAL Delivery Vehicles (SDVs), minisubs which can carry them in to enemy coastlines.

The future is assault submarines and the future is now.

Ork Vehicle News

Though I am still not that far ahead in painting my Kommandos, I got the blister pack with the Ork Kommando with Burna today in Glasgow.

This is a nice model and I am impressed with the sculpting and casting.

I got chatting with the manager and he was talking about the new Ork vehicle(s) that *may* be released next year.

He talked about how the vehicle uses a single chassis, but you can use multiple chassis to build bigger Ork vehicles such as a Battlewagon.

It will be interesting to see how Games Workshop pulll this off, I can’t quite seeing how this would work myself, but I guess that it will work.

Warhammer Fantasy Plastic Buildings

These are the upcoming new Warhammer Fantasy Buildings which Games Workshop will be releasing at some point in the future. There seem to be three buildings and there will also be a release of other terrain such as hills, fences and graveyards.

This is a boxed set looking like it contains both buildings, lots of other scenery and even the hills.

These are the other two buildings, which will be available as separate boxed sets.

I do quite like these, they don’t really fit in with my Steve Barber models, but they are nice.

Space Marine Powered Armour

Looking for some real Power Armour? Now available for real…

Finally all this research into artificial limbs and human strength augmentation — as if we’d want to lift stuff — has resulted in a robotic exoskeleton that doesn’t help your muscles do more, but instead allows them to do less. It was designed by researchers at University of Michigan, and is currently being tested on healthy subjects.

Forge World Newsletter #164

++++ MESSAGE BEGINS ++++

Hello everyone,
And welcome to the first newsletter of 2007, and the first newsletter of what you can be sure will be a packed year of cool new stuff and hobby goodness from us here at Forge World. So without further ado, onto the news …oh, and a Happy New Year!
Alan Bligh
Forge World.

All Good Things..

One urgent piece of intelligence we have for you this newsletter is the ending of our holiday period postage offer. This offer will end at 9am on Monday January 8th. So, if you wish to benefit from our offer of free first class shipping to anywhere in the world on orders of £100 or more in value, including pre-orders for the new Death Korps of Krieg models released on January 29th, your orders must reach us by this date and time. (No exceptions, even for bribes and pledges of your eternal soul!) However, just to remind you that our offer of free express shipping on orders of £250 or more in value will continue as normal.

Screaming Jets!

The thunderous release of our new `Aeronautica Imperialis` game continues apace, and just to let all of you who have already ordered know, we started shipping them out en masse at the beginning of the week, with new stock of the various aircraft coming into us all the time. (And if you haven`t ordered a copy of our spiffy new game yet, why not? …all the cool kids are doing it). But just in case you need even more tempting you can take a look at some of the plush page spreads from this mighty lexicon of all things air war in the 41st millennium Here.

Some good news for Aeronautica players is that a free PDF formatted download of the Fuel & Ammo record sheet is available from our website for use in your games Here. This will save you having to photocopy the one in the back of your rulebook, -just download and play.

Also, packs of the full colour `Aeronautica Imperialis` manoeuvre cards (containing 2 sheets each) are available to purchase separately now from our online store Here. These are the same cards that you get with the rulebook, but we thought they’d be handy if for those of you with budding squadrons on the way and wanted extra.

Keep an eye out of for more `Aeronautica Imperialis` releases in the coming months, which will include every aircraft that`s included in the new rulebook, from the Thunderhawk Gunship to the Phoenix Bomber, more details on just `what and when` you will find in forthcoming newsletters.

Thudd Guns (and an apology)

As you may know, the new Imperial Quad-Launcher, better known as the Thudd Gun, is currently available to pre-order from us (you can find it on our online store Here), unfortunately a mistake on our part meant that you couldn’t download the advertised experimental rules, so our apologies for that, -you can quite definitely get hold of them Here, (and those responsible for the hiccup will be kept away from an over-abundance seasonal `cheer` in the future, fear not!).

Also to whet your appetite for these devices of battlefield slaughter, you can find a painted example of this new artillery piece Here. More Death Korps of Krieg stuff coming soon

Missing Entries

Sorry there have been no postings for the last few days, I had a technical hitch when moving my blog to a new computer with being unable to move the iBlog application due to problems with registering and unregistering the new and old Macs.

Having posted a message on the iBlog forums, I was able to get in touch with Lifli and get some more seats for my licence.

Hopefully this will now mean service back to normal.

Cities of Death

At the beginning of the week I popped into my local toyshop which sales GW stuff and was disappointed to find that they had sold out of their copies of the new Warhammer 40K supplement Cities of Death.

Cities of Death

Having been forced from the centre of Bristol due to a WW2 German Bomb I tried to leave Bristol via Cribbs Causeway and popped into the GW store there which did have copies (but none of the urban basing kits).

Picked up my copy and admired their Cities of Death terrain, one table was being built, the other looked finished and was in my opinion really nicely done, well worth a look if you are in the area.

Had a nice long chat with Zak as the place was surprisingly empty for 5.30pm about various games and stuff.

Cities of Death looks excellent and there are some lovely pictures in there.

I have also had a quick look at the stratagems which look for making a very interesting game and I am looking forward to making some models for them as well.

Next question, do I buy the plastic buildings?
