It wasn’t all Elves and Space Marines…

With Warhammer Historical available, GamesDay 2008 wasn’t just Fantasy and 40K, in Hall 1 there were a fair few historical wargames on show using the various Warhammer Historical rules. This is nothing new, last year we saw was Aly Morrison and Dave Andrews’ excellent World War One demonstration game.

Demonstrating The Great War rules were two games one set in Gallipoli and one in 1914. Here are two pictures of British Artillery about to open fire on the advancing German army.

World War One Artillery

Beautifully painted and modelled.

Scenery was not as nice as Dave’s but was still very well constructured and impressive.

You can see many more pictures of the historical wargaming on my website.

Witchhunter Crusader – Inquisitorial Henchmen

I am adding some Henchmen to my Inquistorial force. I believe that the Crusader adds another attack (and a wound) for the Witch Hunter Inquisitor, but I am not 100% sure on this.

The Crusader (and the Crusader variant available in the Witch Hunters’ retinue) are probably my favourite Inquisitor models.

Having flocked the base with Games Workshop modelling sand, the model was given a white undercoat.

See full workbench feature on the Crusader.

High elves were posh Brits and their arch-rivals, the dark elves, were posh folk that have taken lots of drugs

Orc

The BBC report on Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning made me laugh out loud.

Orcs were essentially football hooligans that have no long-term plans and like hitting things, usually other people, with sticks. Dwarves were a crude caricature of Northerners in that they live down mines, drink beer and have no money. High elves were posh Brits and their arch-rivals, the dark elves, were posh folk that have taken lots of drugs. “Think Byron,”

Not only did it make me laugh, it’s so true as well.

The game does look good though, but is this Liverpool?

So where are the pictures and the news?

So GamesDay 2008 was now just under a week ago and is it just me, or is anyone else disappointed that there are no pictures (or even news) on the official Games Workshop website.

I have seen the Golden Demon Slayer Sword winner on Stuff of Legends, but they still have more photographs to come (over 800)… It would seem that SoL was given special access to the Golden Demon entries, now that would have made my life easier, but hey ho…

I know I got my pictures up fast (hey I was uploading pictures all day to the blog while I was there) and then uploaded the (better quality) images to the web that night.

I wouldn’t expect others to be that fast (I was quite slow in 2007) and this year was an experiment to see if I could be really fast. However seven days later and no images whatsoever on the official GW site. According to White Dwarf Online they will have some images up on the 26th September. Watch that space!

Hmmm.

Ork Flakk Wagon

I think my favourite model from GamesDay 2008 was Forge World’s Ork Flakk Wagon.

Ork Flakk Wagon

From a gaming perspective it can’t really be considered too important as I guess not too many gamers use aircraft in their games (but hey you never know).

From a model perspective it is just a conversion kit, it is not a full resin kit.

I really do like the way it looks, very Orky.

I also like it, because it means that Forge World are making more Ork stuff and I hope that this isn’t a one off, but just the start of lots of new stuff. We do have the Ork Nob Bikerz and Will showed me the Ork Warboss Bike (complete with jet engine).

So what’s going to be next?

What do you think?

Do you want a Thunderfire Cannon?

I didn’t spend a huge amount of money at GamesDay 2008 but did get a few things. Main trouble was that stuff I wanted had sold out. I was also disapppointed with the lack of Ork stuff for sale on the retail stands, all they seemed to have was the Space Marine Thunderfire Cannon, boxes of them, boxes and boxes. Virtually all other new Space Marine stuff such as the Codex and Drop Pod had sold out by 11.00am! However if you wanted a bundle of Thunderfire Cannons, no problem!

Space Marine Thunderfire Cannon

The thing was that it wasn’t only a pre-release it was also an opportunity to get it much much cheaper.

At GamesDay 2008 it was priced at £25. Games Workshop are going to increase their prices on the 29th September, so when the Thunderfire Cannon is released on the 4th October it will be priced at £30 (well according to the red shirt I spoke to at GamesDay).

So why wasn’t the Thunderfire Cannon selling at GamesDay?

According to the same red shirt I spoke to it was because they bought a pallet’s worth with them and it contained small boxes.

Hmmm.

I think not.

I believe it didn’t sell as it was overpriced for what it was (and it’s going to cost even more) and I think that it’s not a very good model. When you compare it to the Forge World Tarantula which is cheaper and looks more “realistic” (well how realistic can a weapon from the 41st millennium be).
One red shirt tried to sell it to me on the basis that it worked well in the game… Well some people may buy figures because of the rules, I buy figures because of the way they look.

So what did I get?

Well I got the Ork Barricades (got the last one). I got the excellent Modelling Masterclass book from Forge World which is full of great stuff. I also got the latest White Dwarf and the Warhammer Historical Old West rules.

What I wanted to get was the Warhammer Historical Great War rules, the Drop Pod, the Space Marine Codex and I even considered getting another Ork Gunwagon – though I may get the new plastic Ork Battlewagon.

GamesDay 2008 – Ork Battlewagon and Warboss Bike

Well back from an exhausting GamesDay 2008.

Posting the pictures online on the blog throughout the day seems to have worked out well, with a lot of discussion on Warseer as a result.

I also took two hundred photographs with my SLR so expect to see those in a day or two.

Saw some fantastic games, great models and still managed to miss a lot of stuff!

In the November issue of (the UK) White Dwarf you will be able to see a picture of the finished Ork Battlewagon which is been used as part of the Tale of Four Gamers.

I was going to take a photograph from the pre-production copy at GamesDay but the White Dwarf team were very insistent that I didn’t.

The model comprises (the already seen) tracks with two Trukk style wheels on each side at the front.

It looks nothing like the Forge World model.

The cab is similar to the original wheeled Battlewagon (from what 15 years ago now and used on the FW Gunwagon).

A similar looking Trukk conversion using the Battlewagon tracks in in the October WD (which was on sale at GD).

There will be either spare parts or conversion kits for the Battlewagon as well with turrets etc…

Interestingly there was no pre-production WD for December (there was at last year’s GD) and the reason I was given was “it would ruin the surprise”.

Asked if it was an Ork Stompa, no reply was given…

I also really liked Will Hayes’ Ork Boss Warbike which has a built in jet engine!

Warboss Bike

Cool!

More later on this week.
