OOP Space Marine Epic Space Ork Great Gargant

Epic Space Ork Great Gargant

This is an OOP Epic Space Ork Great Gargant metal model. it is still bare metal, but looks like it was put together using some kind of epoxy resin which would need to be cleaned off before assembly and painting.
The Great Gargant is the most powerful of all Space Ork Mekboy inventions. It’s vast body houses a multitude of orky engines, generators and dynamos. These power its frightening array of awesome weaponry. Mega-cannon mounted in its belly and on its arm blast its foes with massive destructive power. The Super Lifta-Droppa can popund armoured enemies into the ground. The Gork Head has massive Traktor Cannons mounted in the eye sockets to drag its opponents to their certain doom.

Model designed by Kevin Adams. The box contains one complete unassembled and unpainted Ork Great Gargant. The model requires assembly and painting. There is some old glue on the model.

What I expect to see from Forge World at GamesDay 2009

This is a pure speculation piece, I have no insider knowledge on what to expect from Forge World at GamesDay 2009 on the 27th September, except from what I have been told at previous events (so no real hard information there then) and from the latest Forge World Newsletter, which said:

Forge World`s next event is also by far the largest in our calendar; Games Day UK, and we are already in feverish preparation for the big day itself. As ever we will have our whole design team on hand to answer your questions and preview what we have in store for the future, our massive sales stand with a whole articulated lorry`s worth of stock, display boards, special games and more. We have a Games Day UK page on our website which we`ll be updating with new information as we get closer to the event, but rest assured we will have some exciting major new releases for you on the day. More details will be made available in our special Games Day preview newsletters over the next month.

At the time of writing, the Games Day UK page from Forge World doesn’t have any details about what will be available… so what are my thoughts, in no particular order.

Modelling Masterclass Volume II – I talked to the Forge World guys at their Open Day and some details about Volume II were mentioned, it would for example include the wonderful Chaos Brass Scorpion. That was back in April, so I am guessing that it will be ready forthe UK GamesDay.

Chaos Reaver Titan – we saw this at GamesDay Germany (site in German) and I fully expect to see a painted version at GamesDay UK 2009 and more than likely we will also see it on sale (in limited numbers). This I am guessing will be the big Forge World model at GamesDay, or will it…

More Ork vehicles – we have just had a wonderful series of Ork vehicles, guns and models released from Forge World, a month away from GamesDay, these would have been a perfect release for the big GamesDay event, but they were released early… So there is an opportunity for some more Ork Vehicles, possibly .

Also at the Forge World Open Day were various sketches of new Ork concepts, one of which looks interesting with a Battlewagon with a huge rocket.

We have seen some new Ork stuff, I am sure there is room for more.

We have already seen the Chaos Reaver Titan at a GamesDay, if it was really a special deal, I am guessing it would have been shown first at the UK show and not in Germany (but then again maybe Forge World doesn’t worry about such things, but that’s not the impression I get when taking photographs of work in progress, if they didn’t care, they would let us all snap away…).

So my BIG guess for GamesDay UK 2009 is that we will see a Forge World Ork Gargant.

It makes sense in many ways (and no sense in others). It is the premier Games Workshop event, so Forge World like to do something special.

Games Workshop have released the Stompa, and Forge World like to outdo GW models with even bigger stuff.

With the forthcoming Imperial Armour book on Orks, it would be the perfect opportunity to release some new BIG Ork models. They’ve released the small stuff already so it wouldn’t get lost or overshadowed by a HUGE Gargant. Likewise the Chaos Reaver has already been seen, so this will be new (and not very shiny).

As I said this is pure speculation, guesswork, I have no hard facts whatsoever, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see an Ork Gargant at GamesDay 2009.

Ork Great Gargant and a plastic Thunderhawk

At GamesDay 2003 there were a lot of Forge World Warhound Titans which has just been released. Amongst all that Imperial heavy armour was this lone Ork Great Gargant.

Ork Great Gargant

This was from Armorcast in the days before Games Workshop took large scale resin models back in house and created Forge World. It was only (in theory) available in the USA and was very difficult if not impossible to get in the UK.

If I could find one, afford one and have the time to paint one, I really would like to get hold of this model, but alas I think everything is against me!

With the release of the plastic Stompa you can  compare the detail of the Armorcast Gargant versus the well detailed plastic Stompa now available. Large plastic kits are now certainly achievable technically from Games Workshop, of course the business case has to be made. It is this business case which I suspect means we may never see a plastic Gargant. The main problem will be having such a large kit in the stores. Taking up a large amount of shelf space, means that less space for smaller (probably more profitable) kits. Games Workshop have already started to
reduce the space taken by particular models, by combining all variants into a single box. So no longer do we have separate boxes for the Land Raider variants such as the Crusader, but now have a single box containing all variants. This has made room for the larger kits such as the Baneblade, the Shadowsword and the Stompa.

However to make room for a Gargant kit would mean removing more than just the variant boxes.Interestingly we could see a Reaver, though just as tall as a Gargant, certainly does not need such a large box as it is not as big as a Gargant (in terms of girth).

So what will be the  next big plastic kit?

My view is that we will probably see a Space Marine Thunderhawk.

This has been rumoured for many years, it’s not a matter of if, more a matter of when.

One tidbit to think about with the release of the Skyshield Landing Pad is the following description.

Landing pads are launch bases used by flight-capable craft to unload or evacuate troops and vital personnel. The Skyshield landing pad used by the Imperial Navy, though originally purpose-built to accommodate Valkyrie and Vendetta gunships, is robust enough to serve even the Thunderhawks of the Adeptus Astartes, and has field generators that protect the craft and its crew from incoming fire.

Note my emphasis. Now obviously this could be referring to the Forge World model, but why note this in a kit description. In the rules yes, in the marketing for Games Workshop mainstream, generally they don’t mention Forge World models as part of describing other products, normally as a separate page or link.

The Skyshield landing pad is a very nice model, perfect for the Valkyrie.

So no plastic Gargant  but maybe a plastic Thunderhawk…. perhaps…

Forge World seem to have no intention of making an Ork Gargant, even with the “green tide” of the new Ork Codex, we have seen very little if any new Ork stuff. There has been a rumour shot of a souped up Ork Trukk…

and some ammo grunts….

but apart from those, very little else.

Though I do wonder what else Forge World may be planning…

Pictures from an old Epic battle report

I have lots of pictures on my website which cover a range of different eras, ranges and scales.

It can be quite difficult to find what you might find interesting (and as a webmaster it is quite difficult to decide where to put things). I do have a few battle reports on my website which are quite different to the photographs I usually take, but show a series of photographs from a game.

These pictures are an example of one of my Epic battle reports.

Here Ork fighters attack a detachment of Imperial Baneblade super heavy tanks.

Here an Ork Gargant and a motorised Ork detachment advance.

More pictures from the report here.
