15mm Ruins

These 15mm ruins are from Ironclad Miniatures.

You could use them on infantry bases for Flames of War, but like a lot of people, I am not a great fan of moving walls and ruins that travel across the battlefield.

I will probably make up some ruined buildings to use alongside the Total Battle Miniatures ruins I have and the Flames of War non-ruined buildings.

Building Comparisons

As you are no doubt aware, Battlefront have been releasing some new buildings for Flames of War.

Calais House

As I already have the 15mm Total Battle Miniatures ruins in my collection I was intrigued to see how they compared to the new French buildings from Battlefront for Flames of War. One thing I have found is that when a manufacturer says 15mm this may not always be the same 15mm that another company uses.

Here are a series of photographs of the Calais House next to various 15mm ruins from Total Battle Miniatures.

As you can see they do fit in quite well.

Time to get painting the ruins methinks.

15mm Ruined Café

I already have two of the ruined buildings from the Total Battle Miniatures range of Western Europe 15mm buildings. I was lucky enough to get two more for my birthday from Simon, thank you. He gave me the ruined cafe and ruined shop with passage. This photograph is from the manufacturer.

The ruined cafe is a really nice building and comes complete with some “pavement” out the front that would have been used with tables and chairs.

It’s a nice casting with clean detail and looks very effective.

I will probably use a similar method to the one I used with the other ruins. After washing the resin I will give the model a white undercoat and then use a combination of washing and drybrushing to bring out the detail.

15mm Ruined Shop with Passage

I already have two of the ruined buildings from the Total Battle Miniatures range of Western Europe 15mm buildings, the ruined three houses and ruined four houses. I was lucky enough to get two more for my birthday from Simon, thank you. He gave me the ruined cafe and ruined shop with passage.

The ruined shop with passage is a nice model, though because it is ruined, you wouldn’t realise that there was a passage.

This is the photograph from the manufacturer.

And here is the unruined version.

It’s a nice casting with clean detail and looks very effective.

I will probably use a similar method to the one I used with the other ruins. After washing the resin I will give the model a white undercoat and then use a combination of washing and drybrushing to bring out the detail.

The first stage after washing the resin will be to remove the mould lubricant and then clean the flash from the casting, especially the windows and the doors.

Constructed King Tiger

In the process of sorting some old gaming stuff out I found a bundle of old SDD models. These are 15mm metal castings that I bought back in the 1990s. It makes me think that the other metal models that I have been painting are also SDD.

This box was mainly late war stuff and included a King Tiger. The model consists of four parts: a pair of tracks, the hull and a turret. This is a very nice clean casting, but is quite a heavy model as a result.

It went together very easily, but doesn’t quite sit flat.

Certainly not as detailed as the Flames of War model, the next stage will be a white undercoat.

Finally, finally, finally…

Yes, yes and yes again. Battlefront are (finally) releasing some 15mm buildings for Normandy.

In my look at the Rural Church which was released in May I did ask…

What I have noticed is a distinct lack of building releases for Normandy, there are quite a few buildings in the many photographs you see in the rule books and the two source books for the battle for Normandy. I wonder if the reason is that there are already a fair few companies out there already manufacturing nice resin 15mm buildings already? Having said that a fair few are also making Russian houses and churches too.

So are we going to see any terrain for Western Europe for Flames of War from Battlefront? What do you think?

So here we are some six weeks later and in the latest Wargames Illustrated the new buildings were advertised. What is interesting is how they are going to be released. The buildings will be released on a monthly basis, rotated between the four styles. Battlefront will also rotate the colour scheme. Once a production run has been completed then Battlefront will move onto the next house and paint scheme. The idea is that you will be able to build a gaming board with a variety of houses and paint schemes without any duplication.

The first four releases are as follows.

Normandy Houses from Battlefront for Flames of War

Normandy Houses from Battlefront for Flames of War

To follow these releases will be larger houses and some shops and outhouses.

Very pleased to see these forthcoming releases and looking forward to seeing what else is planned.

15mm Ruined Shop with Passage

I already have two of the ruined buildings from the Total Battle Miniatures range of Western Europe 15mm buildings. I was lucky enough to get two more for my birthday from Simon, thank you. He gave me the ruined cafe and ruined shop with passage.

The ruined shop with passage is a nice model, though because it is ruined, you wouldn’t realise that there was a passage. This is the photograph from the manufacturer.

The reason of course is that Total Battle Miniatures range has both the complete building as well as the ruined building in their range.

The model comes with a separate piece of floor, not sure if I will use it, or build a ruined floor using some scrap wood.

It’s a nice casting with clean detail and looks very effective. I will probably use a similar method to the one I used with the other ruins. After washing the resin I will give the model a white undercoat and then use a combination of washing and drybrushing to bring out the detail.

I now have four ruins, but I think I would like to get some non-ruined buildings to complement the ruins. From photographs of Normandy in 1944, you can see in some villages and towns, whilst some houses were ruined, alongside were others that didn’t even look damaged.
