Pre-ordered the Plastic Deimos Pattern Rhino

I was pleased to see that one of the new Horus Heresy released announced at Warhammer Fest today was the Plastic Deimos-pattern Rhino.

I was pleased to see one of the new Horus Heresy releases announced at Warhammer Fest was the Plastic Deimos Pattern Rhino. So when it was available today for pre-order I clicked through and ordered the kit from my local FLGS.

Looking at the sprues (on the GW site) there are a lot of parts, a lot more parts than when the original plastic Rhino kit came out in the 1980s.

I like the kit and retro yet modern look they have achieved with the kit. Well Forge World did do that ten years ago… This is of course a plastic version of that Forge World resin and plastic hybrid kit.

I did think about ordering the big £180 Age of Darkness boxed set, but decided I would probably never paint all that plastic.

 

 

Plastic Deimos Pattern Rhino

Hot on the heels of the RTB01-esque Mark VI Space Marines comes the classic look of the Deimos Pattern Rhino. It will be easier than ever before to roll out a fully mechanised army for Warhammer: The Horus Heresy.

I like the kit and retro yet modern look they have achieved with the kit. Well Forge World did do that ten years ago… This is of course a plastic version of that Forge World resin kit.

This release of the new plastic kit really feels like Games Workshop going full circle. The Plastic Deimos Pattern Rhino is of course a homage to the original plastic Rhino from the 1980s, which was Games Workshop’s first tank kit for Warhammer 40000 Rogue Trader. This will be a different kind of kit though.

Of course that kit when released the fluff allowed the Rhino to be used by the Imperial Guard. You can see this in this camouflage schemes for the then plastic Rhino kit, which was published to help people paint their new models.

So wonder how many people will buy the plastic Deimos Pattern Rhino for their Imperial Guard armies?

Some more variations. I do like the way that (back then) Space Marine chapters used camouflage on their vehicles.

So will we see a plastic Land Raider Proteus as some point in the future? Well it wouldn’t surprise me if we did.

The Rhino, or more formally, the Mars Pattern Rhino, is an Imperial armoured personnel carrier (APC) that is widely used throughout the galaxy by many different factions, though it is a mainstay vehicle of the Adeptus Astartes. It has provided safe transportation since the days of the Great Crusade, transporting its cargo of Space Marines swiftly and safely to the forefront of battle. Robust and versatile, and able to resist the most hostile of environments, the Rhino has become the basic troop transport for Space Marine squads.

Space Marine HQ Command

At Warhammer World you can buy an Exclusive Space Marine HQ Command set of a Land Raider Excelsior and a Rhino Primaris. In the main display area there is an Ultramarines Land Raider Excelsior and Rhino Primaris.

The Land Raider Excelsior is a specialised variant of the Adeptus Astartes Land Raider that serves a command and control function for a Space Marine planetary assault as well as a role as a heavy main battle tank and armoured transport.

This is the Ultramarines Rhino Primaris.

The Rhino Primaris is a specialised variant of the standard Adeptus Astartes Rhino Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) that serves a battlefield support and command and control function. It often acts in concert with the Land Raider Excelsior, a variant of the standard Land Raider also intended to carry out command and control functions, to help target orbital bombardments from a Space Marine fleet in high orbit of the embattled world.

That time when the Imperial Guard used the Rhino

In a recent post looking back, I posted a scan of when the Imperial Guard used the Land Raider.

When the Land Raider was first released (and we are talking a long time ago now) there was a real lack of armoured vehicles around, so of course if you had an Imperial Guard force you could have a Land Raider…

Well they didn’t just use the Land Raider, they also made extensive use of the Rhino as well.

The other thing to note, was if you were a Space Marine chapter you could use camouflage instead of the usual chapter colours. I quite like the Ultramarines use of jungle camouflage instead of their regular blue.

Back then alien races such as the Eldar and Orks could also make use of both the Land Raider and the Rhino, and of course (as they can do today) Chaos forces used both armoured vehicles as well.

Life Size Rhino

On my most recent visit to Warhammer World, January 2020, the life size Rhino was still guarding the entrance to Warhammer World.

On a previous visit to Warhammer World back in 2012, then the life size Rhino was right in the middle of the car park. When I went in July 2018, it was (as it is now) by the entrance to then revamped and new(ish) Warhammer World entrance.

THQ, who had commissioned the Rhino for their Dawn of War video game “gave” the Rhino to Games Workshop who then gave it a repaint in Ultramarines colours.

Ultramarines Life Size Rhino

The last time I visited Warhammer World it was back in 2012.  Back then the  life size Rhino  was right in the middle of the car park. Now it’s by the entrance to the revamped and new(ish)  Warhammer World.

It was originally used as a promotional piece for the THQ Dawn of War video game.  THQ gave the Rhino to Games Workshop who then gave it a repaint in Ultramarines colours. Here is another view of how it looks today.

It has suffered a little from being outside and is slightly battered and rusty, but this does make it look more “realistic”. This is how it looked six years ago, slightly shinier.
