Ork Trukk Prototype

In a previous post I talked about my Ork Trukk. The finished kit design process goes through many different incarnations before the final model is decided upon. At GamesDay 2007 we saw parts of the process and some of the prototypes.

This is (probably) one of a few prototypes that GW made of the Trukk.

Ork Trukk concept, notice the wheels which are very different to the finished model. This has been made from plastic and plasticard.

It’s made from plasticard, green stuff, plastic struts and resin castings of duplicated parts.

This (or something similar) was then scanned into the computer, enabling the designer to build a 3D cad model of the Trukk.

Once this is finished and checked and signed off…

It is “printed” using a 3D printer.

Another Ork Trukk concept, this has been “printed” from the CAD drawings using a 3D printer. Very similar to the final model, but some subtle differences including the tusks at the front.

From this then the sprues can be designed and the finished kit made.

Ork Trukk

The original Ork Trukk model was designed for Gorkamorka, and then became part of Warhammer 40K with Codex Orks. It was really way too small and needed to be updated, and updated it was in January 2008 with the release of the new Ork Trukk.

Trukks are designed to transport mobs of choppa-wielding Boyz into combat as quickly as possible. Each warband and clan will ‘kustomise’ its trukks to reflect their own predilictions. For example, a Goff vehicle will be functional with a large crew compartment, while the Evil Sunz almost always have turbo-charged engines and a red paint job.

I do like this model and think it is very Orky. You get a very thin box with two sprues, transfers and instructions.

The model was constructed as per the instructions, Generally I try and build as much of the model as possible to avoid having to glue painted parts together… The chassis and engine were the first parts I stuck together.

I then put the wheels together.

The wheels were then stuck to the chassis.

See the workbench feature on this Ork Trukk.

You can see how the Trukk was developed by Games Workshop from some of the photographs I took at GamesDay.

Skullhamma Battle Fortress

The Skullhammer is the delight of many a Big Mek, a clanking hissing contraption inviariably made from looted parts.

On display at GamesDay 2007.

When this model was first shown I did consider buying a BaneBlade to copy the conversion and create my own Skullhamma. However as I wasn’t too sure about how it would turn out, also time and money, decided I would leave the idea as just that an idea. In the end I got a Battlewagon.

Baneblade for an Imperial Commissar

So you’re an Imperial Commissar and you need a personal transport.

No way are you going to be happy with a Chimera or a Leman Russ, no you need the biggest and the best, you want a Baneblade super heavy tank.

Plaguereaper of Nurgle

Plaguereaper of Nurgle on display at GamesDay 2007.

Converting a Plaguereaper requires a fairly high degree of modelling skill (and a particularly sinister mind, judging by our model shown here). These bastions of pestilence pour forth their corrosive filth onto the enemy, drowning the foe in flesh and armour-eating pus and muck. In game terms, the Plaguereaper shares much in common with a Baneblade, exchanging the main gun for the vile pus cannon. This Strength 7, AP 3 template weapon can dig out almost any defender from any position, the torrent of filth murdering anything shy of a Terminator. The mental image of a Plaguereaper plying its trade on the frontlines is almost as unpleasant as the battlefield reality.

Imperial Guard Baneblade

Here is a photograph of a very clean Imperial Guard Baneblade from the display cabinets at GamesDay 2007.

There is a fair bit of weathering, note the rusty tracks and chipped paintwork, still looks a little too clean too me.
