Cybermen

Cybermen were a “race” of cybernetically augmented humanoids. They varied greatly in design, with different factions throughout time and space. The two major groups, from which all other known versions derived, were the Mondasian Cybermen, which originated on the planet Mondas – Earth’s twin planet in the Doctor’s Universe – and the Cybermen created by Cybus Industries, which originated on Earth in an alternate universe.

They attacked Earth on many occassions, providing a lot of potential for gaming scenarios.

These are the Harlequin Miniatures Cybermen from the 1990s. They are the classic era style Cybermen who fought the 4th Doctor onwards. After giving them a white undercoat, I painted a basecoat of Citadel BoltGun Metal.

The next stage will be a black wash to bring out the detail.

Doctor Who: Tip Of The Tongue

As part of the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who, there are going to be eleven short novels from famous authors covering (as you might have guessed) all eleven Doctors.

Doctor Who: Tip Of The Tongue - Patrick Ness

The fifth book is Tip Of The Tongue and features the fifth Doctor and Nyssa.

In 1945, a strange new craze for Truth Tellers is sweeping the kids of small-town America. The Fifth Doctor and Nyssa soon arrive to investigate the phenomenon, only to discover that the actual truth behind the Truth Tellers is far more sinister than anyone could have imagined…

I did enjoy the both the last book, The Roots of Evil, and the one before, The Spear of Destiny. I was never a great fan of the fifth doctor, probably because I had enjoyed the Tom Baker years so much. I think that was about the time I stopped watching Doctor Who too. However I do intend to read this book and hopefully I might change my mind about the fifth Doctor.

Naming the Doctor

Name of the Doctor
Really enjoyed watching Name of the Doctor last night on the BBC.

So we didn’t get to know the name of the Doctor (which I am pleased about) but we did get to see all the original classic Doctors, in addition to David Tennant and Chris Eccleston.

I liked the explanation of the “impossible girl” and her interactions with the other incarnations of the Doctor.

From a technical perspective, I did think that the editing of classic Doctor Who needed a little bit more work. If you have watched Deep Space Nine’s Trouble with Tribbles episode, you know it is possible to combine old footage with new stuff. I wonder though if the problem was that the old Doctor Who footage was shot on video tape (rather than film) and that was reflected when watching this episode in HD. Still nice and clever to get everyone in there.

I won’t reveal much more as I suspect some people are yet to see it (via iPlayer and the like). It was great to see Madam Vastra, Jenny and Strax again.

Now looking forward to the 50th Anniversary episode in November…

Basing the Robot Mummys

Back in the 1990s Harlequin Miniatures produced a licensed range of 28mm metal miniatures  and I bought back a few of the blisters, including the robot mummy.

The Robot Mummy in the TV series was quite an aged light brown colour, certainly not white.

After painting them I started on their bases. The Robot Mummys in the TV series were running around a Victorian Gothic mansion in 1911 rather than the surface of Mars; so I decided to give them grassy temperate bases rather than Martian sand.

Here are all four.

Back in the 1990s Harlequin Miniatures produced a licensed range of 28mm metal miniatures and I have three Cybermen. They are Mondasian Cybermen from the original series rathe than the new versions that arrived on our screens in 2006.

The first thing I did was to “cement” the models to their bases using some Green Stuff.
