Dad’s Army hits the big screen

Dad's Army on the big screen

So the first trailer for the reboot of Dad’s Army is out.

It hits the big screens in 2016. It has Toby Jones as Captain Mainwaring, Michael Gambon as Prviate Godfrey, Bill Nighy as Sergeant Wilson, Tom Courtenay as Lance-Corporal Jack Jones, Bill Paterson as Private Fraser and Daniel Mays as Private Joe Walker. And Catherine Zeta-Jones will set pulses racing in her role as visiting journalist Rose Winters

Any reboot is always a challenge, however I am quite looking forward to watching this when it comes out. The characters are not quite the same as the long running TV series. Bill Nighy though makes the role of Sergeant Wilson his own.

Though Tom Courtenay makes a cracking Corporal Jones.

World War Z

A three minute clip of World War Z has been released.

Despite the poor reviews and perceptions of this film, I might go and see it, well, wait until it comes out on DVD.

The book is very different to what I have seen of the film,  so you might want to get a copy of  World War Z and have a read.

See some photographs from Glasgow where they filmed the above scene.

Red Dawn Trailer

Now we can see the full Red Dawn trailer.

I have to admit I enjoyed the original Red Dawn movie when it came out in 1984 and do rewatch it now and again.

The remake has been in the works for a fair few years now, same basic storyline as the 1984 movie, but this time no Russians or Cubans, now we have Chinese, sorry now it’s North Korean, invaders. They were going to be Chinese, but the movie makers realised that if they did that then they would be unable to show it in the China market and that’s a lot of potential tickets and money.

Looks like it could be fun. So far no real trailer, but there was some footage recently on Entertainment Tonight.

Update: ah the vagaries of YouTube means that the video has been removed by Open Road Films…

The Dark Knight Rises

I have quite enjoyed Christopher Nolan’s reboot of Batman with the first two films, The Dark Knight and Batman Begins. As a result I am looking forward to The Dark Knight Rises the conclusion of the trilogy.

As you can see in the trailer there is a fair bit of hardware in the film and lots of ideas for gaming.

Age of Heroes

Inspired by the true story of ‘James Bond’ author Sir Ian Fleming’s creation of one of most important elite units in the history of the British Armed Forces, this spectacular World War II action-thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat. An inspiration to the modern day SAS, 30 Commando was a new breed of special operations taskforce created to carry out some of the most dangerous missions in the Second World War. Starring Sean Bean (Lord Of The Rings, Black Death) and Danny Dyer (The Business, The Football Factory), together again for the first time since Nick Love’s The Outlaw, Age of Heroes follows the unique circumstances behind 30 Commando’s inception and the unit’s first highly classified smash-and-grab mission into occupied Norway, to capture vital radar technology that will change the course of the war. But when their escape route is uncovered, the commandos find themselves in a pitched battle to reach the border against vicious Nazi General Dietl (Christian Rubeck) and his deadly 5th Alpine Division.

I recently rented this movie from iTunes (for just 99p) and really quite enjoyed it. It’s no Saving Private Ryan but it did remind of Where Eagles Dare and The Heroes of Telemark.

I thought it was well filmed and there is some fantastic scenery. The action sequences are pretty good and I like the period feel.

Of course any film with Sean Bean…

…is always worth watching.

Watch Age of Heroes on Amazon Video.

Red Tails

This film from Lucasfilms is looking excellent. Some great special effects as well as authentic looking planes and tanks (we can thank CGI for that).

1944. As the war in Europe continues to take its toll on Allied forces, the Pentagon brass has no recourse but to consider unorthodox options — including the untried and untested African-American pilots of the experimental Tuskegee training program. Just as the young Tuskegee men are on the brink of being shut down and shipped back home, they are given the ultimate chance to show their courage. Against all the odds, with something to prove and everything to lose, these intrepid young airmen take to the skies to fight for their country — and the fate of the free world.
