The Land Raider is regarded by many as the finest armoured fighting vehicle of its class in the Imperium’s arsenal, and is the mainstay battle tank of the Space Marine Legions. It is a phenomenally powerful war machine, its multi-layered composite armour and reinforced hull all but impervious to even heavy weapons, being a sealed unit designed to resist enemy attack from any approach. Intended to serve in almost any environment as both war machine and exploration vehicle, it can operate freely in war zones ranging from acid swamps to rad-deserts without any noticeable impediment to its performance, and can even operate in hard vacuum, ensuring there is no open battlefield on which its armoured wrath cannot be unleashed.

Those of us who have been playing Warhammer 40K since it was first released will recognise this model. It is of course a new version of the original Land Raider that was released back in 1987 following the release of the 1st edition of Warhammer 40,000, Rogue Trader. Forge World released a resin version a fair few years ago, and since then, a plastic version of the kit has been released as part of The Horus Heresy range.

Land Raider Proteus

There were various Land Raider Proteus models on display at Warhammer World.

Land Raider Proteus

Mechanicus tech-savants believe that the Land Raider Proteus is a precursor to the Phobos pattern vehicle now found amongst the armouriums of the Adeptus Astartes. Bulkier and faster than the Phobos, ancient and forgotten data-looms describe the Proteus as a forward assault vehicle, commonly fielded in Explorator missions during the dawning days of Mankind’s fledgling galactic empire.

Forge World did release a resin version over ten years ago and this is the model on display above.

There was also this variant Proteus with armoured hull mounted dual lascannons on display made from the new plastic kit.

This variant can be made from the Horus Heresy plastic kit.

It is similar to the armoured Proteus which was announced back at Games Day 2011. However it is missing the sponsons.

Plastic Land Raider Proteus available to pre-order

The new plastic Land Raider Proteus is available to pre-order today

I do like this model and I am seriously considering getting one to go with my Deimos-pattern Rhino. It is £52.50, though your FLGS may be selling it at a discount.

We are now returning full circle to the original plastic Land Raider model which was released in 1988, well close enough.

Plastic Land Raider Proteus available to pre-order next week

Back in April I wrote after seeing the plastic Spartan Land Raider Assault Tank I did wonder if we would see a plastic Land Raider Proteus.

With the announcement of the plastic Spartan Land Raider Assault Tank it got me thinking, will we also a plastic Land Raider Proteus? It wouldn’t be too much of a step to have a plastic kit of this Land Raider? Essentially the Spartan is a stretched Land Raider.

After it was announced back in August, today we see that we are going to be able to pre-order the plastic Land Raider Proteus next week.

Land Raider Proteus

Before the Spartan Assault Tank there was one true king of armoured troop conveyance – the Land Raider. Many patterns of these lumbering tanks exist in Legion armouries, but none have the pedigree of the venerable Land Raider Proteus, which now returns to the Age of Darkness with a new plastic kit.

I do like this model and I am seriously considering getting one, depending on the price, to go with my Deimos-pattern Rhino.

So, now we are returning full circle to the original plastic Land Raider model which was released in 1988, well very close.

Well today we see that we are going to get a plastic Land Raider Proteus with an announcement on the Warhammer Community site.

Dating back to the Dark Age of Technology, these vehicles are no less capable of surviving the harsh realities of civil war than their more spritely cousins, exhibiting uncommonly strong influence from their machine spirits. There are stories of these tanks continuing to blast away as their crew lie dying, or rumbling back to base with damage that would wreck lesser machines.

I do like this model. It will be a few weeks (months) before it is released, but I am seriously considering getting one.

So, now we are returning full circle to the original plastic Land Raider model which was released in 1988, well very close.

Plastic Land Raider Proteus perhaps?

It wouldn’t be too much of a step to have a plastic kit of this Land Raider? Essentially the Spartan is a stretched Land Raider.

It would mean producing a new hull for the plastic tracks, but that would mean replacing potentially one sprue with another.

Of course this would mean returning full circle to the original plastic Land Raider model which was released in 1988, well nearly.

Designing the Land Raider Proteus and Deimos Rhino

The original Rogue Trader plastic Land Raider boxed set is a true classic, treasured by many veteran gamers, and the process of updating it to create the Proteus Land Raiders has been a suitably reverent one. To give you an insight into how we designed the various ‘old style’ Space Marine kits we’ve been working on recently, Tony Cottrell, Phil Stutcinskas and Daren Parrwood have recorded a video looking into the development of the Land Raider Proteus model.

I like how the video shows you the different sizes of the different Land Raider models now available.

I did buy the original plastic Rhino and thought (at the time) what a clever plastic model kit it was. No idea where they are now, probably languishing in the bottom of a box somewhere in the garage.
