Tallarn Missile Launcher Team

As well as my other Daemonhunters Inquisitorial Stormtroopers which are based on the Cadian Kasrkin I have also decided to add a unit based on the Tallarn or I may just use them as inducted Imperial Guard. I have had these models for a fair while.

I did look at my original painting scheme that I was using for the blister pack of Tallarn Imperial Guard. I had used a basecoat of Desert Yellow followed by a wash consisting of Chestnut Ink and Scorched Brown paint.

However I did think about doing something slightly different now that Contrast paints were available. I had painted some Star Wars Legion Rebel Troopers with Citadel Snakebite Leather Contrast paint and had been impressed with the results.

I painted the models with Snakebite Leather Contrast paint, after giving them another spray with Citadel Corax White to improve the effect of the contrast paint.

The next step was a drybrush. The other Tallarn models I painted I had drybushed the three models with Snakebite Leather and Bleached Bone. Neither of these paints were available any more. So using this chart I used Layer Balor Brown instead of Snakebite Leather and used Layer Ushabti Bone instead of Bleached Bone.

These are the two crew for the missile launcher team.

Unlike highlighting and glazes and the suchlike, drybrushing does not give as neat as a finish as those methods. However I quite like the dusty look for these desert based models and these are going to be gaming models, not Golden Demon entries!

Making progress on the Repressor

The Repressor tank is often used by Sisters of Battle as transport, and by the Adeptus Arbites in an anti insurgency role. I said in a blog post back in 2004.

“I do like this model and I am intending to get one to use with my Daemonhunters army as a transport for the Storm Troopers”.

I did get one that Christmas as a present. Though I actually started building and painting this model back in 2007, I recently retrieved it from storage and decided that I would try and finish painting it. I realised I had made quite significant progress.

Having sprayed the model with Citadel Zandri Dust. I started the detailing, using Leadbelcher on the weapons and the exhausts. The next step was painting the iconography and purity seals.

Here is the Repressor with the dozer blade and turret.

I had used shades on the blade and the turret. I still have some work to do on the iconography before I shade the rest of the vehicle.

Purity Seals on the Repressor

Having sprayed the model with Citadel Zandri Dust. I started the detailing, using Leadbelcher on the weapons and the exhausts. The next step was painting the iconography and purity seals. For the skull I used Ushabti Bone.

I painted the purity seals using Ushabti Bone for the paper and for the wax seals I used Mephiston Red.

Painting tracks

Having started repainting my Land Raider, a MkIIb Land Raider, the Razorback and the Repressor, I decided to paint the tracks. Having liked what I did with the Deimos-pattern Rhino tracks, I went with the same process.

I had done a few different things with the different tracks, but most had a black undercoat.

I gave the Land Raider tracks a spray of Mechanicus Standard Grey.

I did the same for the Rhino tracks.

The tracks for the Deimos-pattern Rhino are much better than the tracks you get with the Rhino kit.

The next step will be a heavy drybrush of Gorthor Brown, then a wash of Agrax Earthshade Shade. The tracks will be finished off with a light drybrush, first with Leadbelcher, then Terminatus Stone.

Contrasting the Inquisitorial Stormtroopers using the Tallarn Box

I have had these models for a fair while.

I did look at my original painting scheme that I was using for the blister pack of Tallarn Imperial Guard. For them I had used a basecoat of Desert Yellow. Having finished the base coat I gave the models a wash consisting of Chestnut Ink, Scorched Brown paint (which helps remove the gloss of the ink) and some water to thin the wash down.

So I went to paint the models with Snakebite Leather Contrast paint, however upon closer inspection, I realised that the white undercoat was quite sparing on the metal models. This would have been fine using the Desert Yellow basecoat, however I didn’t think it would be the ideal primer for the contrast paint. So I took the models and gave them another spray with Citadel Corax White.

Then I painted them with the Snakebite Leather Contrast paint.

I am actually quite pleased with how they came out. I got a similar effect as I did when using paint and an ink wash, as you can compare here with the Tallarn models I painted before.

The next step is to drybrush with a lighter brown to extenuate the detail.

Inquisitorial Stormtroopers using the Tallarn Box

I have given the models a white undercoat.

The other challenge was that the paints and inks I had used before, were no longer available.

Refreshing the Repressor

The Repressor tank is often used by Sisters of Battle as transport, and by the Adeptus Arbites in an anti insurgency role.

The Repressor is an Imperial armoured personnel carrier (APC) based on the standard Rhino chassis. The Repressor is used by both the Adeptus Arbites as a riot control and crowd suppression vehicle, and by the Adepta Sororitas as an infantry transport during intense urban battles. The Repressor uses an extensively converted Rhino chassis; the transport compartment has been greatly expanded upon, a raised roof featuring firing slits for the passenger’s weapons has been added, a large dozer blade used to plow through debris and rioting mobs is attached to the front of the vehicle, and the vehicle possesses a small forward cupola-mounted turret.

I was using Tausept Ochre as the base coat, though as you can see the basecoat wasn’t covering the black undercoat very well.

At one point I decided that I would try using Citadel’s spray gun to base coat the rest of the Repressor. However due to thinning the paint too much I didn’t get the result I hoped for. It was really at this point it got put away.

However having liked the paint scheme I was using on my Deimos-pattern Rhino, I decided that I would paint the Repressor using the same method, but not necessarily the bright yellow of the Rhino.

The first thing I did was spray the model with Citadel Zandri Dust.

This certainly covered the model well, and looked better than the Tausept Ochre paint.

The next stage will be the detailing in Leadbelcher before shading the model.

Grey Knights for Aeronautica Imperialis

I have been thinking about is what colour to paint my Adeptus Astartes models for Aeronautica Imperialis.

I have the models from the Wrath of Angels and am seriously considering getting a Thunderhawk as well.

I did think about Ultramarines blue, then Salamanders green, but now thinking about painting them up as Grey Knights.

Forge World had a display of a Grey Knights Thunderhawk at a GamesDay event.

I think this could work, however they used a grey colour scheme. A lot of Grey Knight vehicles were also painted in this scheme.

When I started thinking about painting my Aeronautica Imperialis models I was thinking painting them the same colour as Grey Knights.

Giving the models a base coat of Leadbelcher and then washes and detailing.

Now reflecting on the excellent Forge World models I am now thinking of following that scheme on the Aeronautica Imperialis models.

It also got me thinking that I could add some Inquisitorial Storm Troopers Valkyrie Transports to the force as well.

Add another boxed set of those to the shopping list.

I will also need to think about rules, either using the vanilla rules, or doing some tweaking.

I have some Daemonhunters Inquisitorial Stormtroopers which are based on the Cadian Kasrkin I decided many years ago to add a unit based on the Tallarn or I may just use them as inducted Imperial Guard.

Having found some Tallarn Heavy Weapons blisters in a box, I dug around to see if I could find my other Tallarn models to finish them off. I did manged to find the boxed set, from which I had based and undercoated the models. I then later found the three models from the blister pack.

What did surprise me slightly was I had done some more work on them, but never got around to photographing them for the blog or website. As a result I had forgotten how much progress I had made with them.

I had done the flesh and drybrushed them. I had drybrushed the three models with Snakebite Leather and Bleached Bone. Unlike highlighting and glazes and the suchlike, drybrushing does not give as neat as a finish as those methods. However I quite like the dusty look for these desert based models and these are going to be gaming models, not Golden Demon entries!

I quite like them, but they could do with a little more work to finish them off. They are quite dusty looking, so I might give them a light wash of Serpahim Sepia to tone down that look and add a little more shadow. Back in the day when I painted these I had used an ink wash mix (as Citadel Shades weren’t around).

Certainly means I can look at the boxed set and get them finished, I am thinking I might use a Contrast paint on them to get them done faster…
