New Ork Dreads and Kans

Games Workshop have on their website details of the new Ork Deff Dread and new Ork Killa Kans. Check out these links for more pictures and ordering information.

I do like the new Killa Kans which come three to a boxed set.

Killa Kans are essentially giant metal canisters on piston-driven legs that sport lethal close combat attachments and heavy-duty weaponry. One of their limbs usually ends in deadly-looking power shears or a great blood-encrusted buzz saw, whilst the other is a large calibre weapon welded to the opposite side.

This box set contains three multi-part plastic Ork Killa Kans. This 94-piece set includes: three variations of Cockpit, three different close combat weapons, a big shoota, a rokkit launcha and a skorcha. Also included are a host of glyphs, armour plates, horns, metal teef and dangly bitz. Models supplied with 60mm round bases.

You don’t get the chance to arm all three with the same weapon which is a standard tactic when using Ork Killa Kans, my metal models are all armed with Rokkit Launchas for example. But I am sure that if you wanted to swap there may be people you could swap with. I might use metal weapons, or spare weapons from the other plastic Ork kits I have.

I am less enthusiastic about the Deff Dread, but then I didn’t really like the old metal Ork Dreadnought. Still quite an impressive plastic kit. I am thinking the main reason I don’t like it, is the four arms!

Deff Dreads epitomise three main ideal of Ork warfare: big, shooty and stompy. They thunder and clank towards the foe, limbs waving as heavy weapons spit death into the enemy ranks and powered shears snip excitedly in anticipation of the bloodletting to come.

This box set contains one multi-part plastic Ork Deff Dread. This 86-piece set includes: two cockpit sights, 10 different glyphs, five different close combat weapons, two big shootas, two rokkits, two kustom blastas, a skorcha, and other assembly options. Model supplied with a 60mm round base.

I am very tempted by the Killa Kans (not like that I don’t already have enough ork stuff to paint). Models are out on the 6th March.

Blood Angels dropping in…

Blood Angels

April sees the return of the Blood Angels.

This April the Blood Angels will be re-launched with an all-new Codex and range of plastic and metal miniatures. One of the oldest and noblest of all Space Marine Chapters, the Blood Angels have stood fast against the enemies of the Imperium since the Great Crusade and it was their Primarch Sanguinius, who laid down his life to aid the Emperor against Horus in the final hours of the Warmaster’s rebellion. The new Codex explores the background and history of these superhuman warriors like never before, and contains new artwork depicting some of their greatest battles and most powerful champions.

The Blood Angels have always been a powerful close combat army and have been made even deadlier thanks to a range of specialist wargear, the ability to field Assault Squads as Troops choices, and more Dreadnoughts than any other Space Marine Chapter, including a Death Company Dreadnought and the fabled Furioso Dreadnought. The Sons of Sanguinius will be deep striking onto a tabletop near you this April – now’s the time to practice painting red.

Weaver

Saw this in a bookshop recently and am considering buying it.

weaver

Weaver is a novel around World War Two in which the Germans successfully invade England.

The Weaver of Time’s Tapestry has finally succeeded in twisting the threads of history into a new shape; the Luftwaffe have pushed the RAF to the brink, and the invasion barges have reached the beaches of Sussex and Kent. Britain wakes up to the nightmare of the Wermacht unleashed in Southern England. As the desperate battle to hold up the invasion rages it is left to a few individuals caught up in the panic and chaos to piece together what has really happened – is this the culmination of a plan that has taken centuries to play out, a plot from the future to change the past forever? Stephen Baxter’s historical thriller series crashes into the 20th century with a terrifying vision of mechanised war and political atrocity unleashed on English soil. This is the climax of one of the most thoughtful and involving series of novels that have brought history alive like no other.

My only reservation was that this is the fourth book in a series of books, the first of which deal with Romans and William the Conqueror.

Do I need to read the first three books to make sense of the fourth, or can I enjoy the fourth without needing to buy and read the first three books?

Ork Heavy Support

The more I look at my Ork army, especially the unpainted stuff, I start to realise how unbalanced the force is. I have way too much Heavy Support and much less of everything else.

What only now you realise this?

I have very few HQ and Elite units, though in comparison more Troops and Fast Attack types.

Why is this?

Forge World to be honest.

Can I help it that they make such wonderful Ork vehicles and tanks? The recent new stuff is fantastic.

Not really sure what to do about it. Well I like the models so getting rid of them is not an option. I also don’t want to spend more money building up my other non-Heavy Support units.

Don’t get me wrong the force is ideal for Apocalypse. So it’s also not like that I can’t use the models either.

To be honest I think the only real solution us for my opponent to invest in a ShadowSword.

The Triffids are back…

Tonight (and part two tomorrow night) sees the new interpretation of The Day of the Triffids. I mentioned this back in November 2008 and quoted the BBC back then saying:

The drama, about menacing plants taking over the world, will be shown in two feature-length episodes next year.

Well, here we are in the final week of “next year” and the drama is on this week!

I think that there is quite a bit of gaming potential with The Day Of The Triffids, small groups of survivors trying to get past hordes of triffids. Even groups of survivors fighting each other over food caches.

Might try and think of some rules and look for models.
