Painting the Typhon Tracks

My latest model for my Imperial Fists Horus Heresy force is the Typhon Heavy Siege Tank.

The Typhon Heavy Siege Tank was released as a plastic kit for The Horus Heresy. I’ve always liked the Forge World resin model and so was pleased to get one of the new plastic kits for my Imperial Fists force.

Having started constructing the model, I finished putting it together. The next stage was a white undercoat. I then gave the model a partial base coat of Army Painter Desert Yellow. I then gave the model a base coat of Army Painter Daemonic Yellow. I painted the bolter and the exhausts using Citadel Leadbelcher. It was then onto shading the model and then shading it some more.

I had used Citadel Agrax Earthshade Shade on the tracks, forgetting that I should have done a heavy drybrush of Gorthor Brown first.

So I did the heavy drybrush of Gorthor Brown .

I then washed the tracks (again) with Citadel Agrax Earthshade Shade.

I nearly forgot to paint the extra track pieces that come with the Typhon kit (as it is longer than the standard Land Raider). Once I remembered I did them the same way as the rest of the tracks.

After painting and shading them, I drybrushed them lightly, first with Leadbelcher. I then did a very light drybrush with Terminatus Stone.

Shading the Typhon more

The Typhon Heavy Siege Tank was released as a plastic kit for The Horus Heresy. I’ve always liked the Forge World resin model and so was pleased to get one of the new plastic kits for my Imperial Fists force.

Having started constructing the model, I finished putting it together. The next stage was a white undercoat. I then gave the model a partial base coat of Army Painter Desert Yellow. I then gave the model a base coat of Army Painter Daemonic Yellow. I painted the bolter and the exhausts using Citadel Leadbelcher. It was then onto shading the model.

I did some more shading using Citadel Reikland Fleshshade Shade and Citadel Seraphim Sepia Shade and Citadel Nuln Oil Shade on the exhausts.

I used Citadel Seraphim Sepia Shade on the main weapon.

Once that shade was dry, I used Citadel Nuln Oil Shade on the engine vents and the exhausts.

I then used Citadel Nuln Oil Shade on the wheels as well.

I also used Citadel Agrax Earthshade Shade on the tracks, forgetting that I should have done a heavy drybrush of Gorthor Brown first.

I will need to do that, and then use Citadel Agrax Earthshade Shade on the tracks.

Tracking the Deimos Predator

The Predator is perhaps the best known and most widespread variant of the basic Rhino chassis. Augmented with superior armour and firepower, it entirely sacrifices the Rhino’s troop transport capacity in favour of ammunition and generators for its formidable weapon systems. 

Having got this kit for Christmas, I started putting the model together. For painting I kept the sponsons separate and I can easily remove the turret as well. I gave the model an undercoat of Citadel White Scar. I gave the model a couple of light coats of Daemonic Yellow. I  painted the main weapon, and the exhausts, with Leadbelcher. It was then onto shading the model. For the next stage I used some Citadel Layer Yriel Yellow. I took a large brush and gave the model, what I would call, a heavy drybrush. I then did some more drybrushing some lighter yellow paints.

The next stage was to affix the tracks to the Predator.

With the tracks for the Predator I gave them a spray of Mechanicus Standard Grey, this was followed by a heavy drybrush of Gorthor Brown. The tracks, once dry, had a wash of Agrax Earthshade Shade. After painting and shading them, I drybrushed them lightly, first with Leadbelcher. I then did a very light drybrush with Terminatus Stone.

The tracks were removed from the sprue and using superglue they were attached to the Predator.

You have to be careful when attaching these, as they are specific to each side of the Predator, but they do attach to the Predator quite easily.

Tracking the Deimos Rhino

The Rhino is the most widely used armoured personnel carrier in the Imperium. Based on ancient STC technology, the fundamental design is robust, reliable, and easy to maintain, with an adaptive power plant that can run off a wide variety of fuels.

I bought the plastic Deimos Pattern Rhino when it came out in the summer, you can see the workbench for that Rhino here.  I was lucky enough to get a second Rhino for a Christmas present. The model has many more parts and is a more detailed kit than the original plastic Rhino kit that came out in the 1980s. I constructed the model to the instructions, though I left the tracks off to paint separately. I gave the model an undercoat of Citadel White Scar. I gave the model a couple of light coats of Daemonic Yellow. I also painted the bolter and exhausts with Leadbelcher. I then shaded the model. For the next stage I used some Citadel Layer Yriel Yellow. I took a large brush and gave the model, what I would call, a heavy drybrush. I then did some more drybrushing.

Vindicator Siege Tank available to pre-order

Next week you will be able to pre-order the  Vindicator Siege Tank plastic kit for The Horus Heresy.

Legion Deimos Pattern Vindicator

Lay waste to enemy fortifications and pulverise whole squads of Astartes with salvos of shells spat from the hull-mounted demolisher cannon of the Vindicator Siege Tank.

I do like this model, but of course I already have its larger brother the Typhon heavy siege tank, so not sure I need another siege tank for my Imperial Fists.

But I like the model….

I prefer it over the previous Vindicator model.

Shading the Typhon

It was then onto shading the model. I used some Citadel Reikland Fleshshade Shade, aiming to achieve the same result I got with my first Deimos Pattern Rhino.

This time though, compared to some of my other models I went with an initial lighter shade, with the intention to add more later.

I gave the main weapon a wash of Agrax Earthshade Shade.

I also shaded the gun shield with Citadel Reikland Fleshshade Shade.

The next step will be some more shading.

Horus Heresy options

Classic tanks from the Forge World range return to the Horus Heresy at the Games Workshop webstore, upgraded with new plastic sponson sprues that make it easier than ever to add weapon variety to your armoured companies. 

The various resin models, such as the Mastodon Heavy Assault Transport, will now come with the sponsons sprue that is available now with the plastic releases that we have seen.

There is an implication here that future Horus Heresy releases may now be resin models. Especially as the only preview we have seen over recent months has been the Vindicator.

Though that may also mean that the Legion models we have seen, will now be supplemented with plastic releases for other Horus Heresy forces, such as the Solar Auxilia.

Typhon Sponson Weapons

Having constructed the sponson weapons I gave them an undercoat of white spray paint.

I was intending to give the sponson weapons a base coat of Citadel Leadbelcher but my spray had run out when I had base coated the main weapon.

However I did give the shields of the weapons a spray of Army Painter Daemonic Yellow.

I will then use a pot of Citadel Leadbelcher to paint the weapons.

Detailing the Typhon

The next step was to paint the bolter and the exhausts using Citadel Leadbelcher.

The next step will be shading the model.

Unlike some of my other models there is no iconography on the Typhon, so this stage was quicker than some of my Grey Knights models.

I then gave the model a base coat of Army Painter Daemonic Yellow.

I also gave the main weapon shield the same basecoat of Army Painter Daemonic Yellow.

This is the Typhon with the dreadnought siege weapon.
