Ork Stompa Sprue

Of the many sprues you get in the Ork Stompa box is this one with the gubbinz and krew.

It allows you to customise your Stompa with lots of bitz. There are lots of (probably) spare bitz that you could use on other Ork vehicles. I would like it if both Games Workshop and Forge World made more of these types of things for conversions and scenery. I know I would appreciate them, and I am sure others would as well.

Ork Stompa on the workbench

It was rumoured for years, the original Apocalypse release saw pictures of what was at the time referred to as staff scratch-built models, but on the 7th March 2009 saw the release of the plastic Stompa.

When a mere dreadnought just isn’t stompy enough, a Mek feels the urge to build a stompa. As big as a Battle Fortress, a Stompa is a walking, shooting, roaring idol of Gork. It has a crew of several Orks aided by dozens of Grot riggers, runners and assistants. A Stompa usually mounts two or three enormous guns as well as some form of oversized claw or whirring blade for chewing up enemy tanks and titans in close combat.

The Games Workshop website has a great step by step guide to making up your model. They also have a nice gallery of Stompa models too, which is great, as I always like to see how others have painted theirs before I model and paint mine. Though the style and paint job of the GW Stompa above is very likely the way I am going to go.

You do get one BIG box with all the sprues in there.

Lots of nice artwork on the box to inspire you.

Then you open the box and see all that plastic and think “oh that’s a lot of plastic”.

Ork Stompa Conversion Kits

In their latest newsletter, Forge World have announced that they will at their Open Day show off some exciting Ork Stompa conversion kits.

First of a new set of resin upgrades for the plastic Stompa kit, we have a titan-killing Claw Arm, a new Ork Stompa Head complete with the baleful gaze of Mork (or possibly Gork) and fighting-platform jaw, and the devastating if dangerously erratic Lifta-Droppa! These wonderfully ramshackle looking sets have been designed by Stuart Williamson, with crew by Mark Bedford.

Does this mean I need to buy another Stompa?

Orky House

One of the highlights of GamesDay 2009 for me was the fantastic Ork Shanty Town display that Forge World did. They used various models to make the scenery. In this photograph Forge World have used a plastic Battlewagon to make an Ork “house”.

Also in there is a exhaust pipe from an Ork Stompa.

A very clever piece of modelling.

Stompa Variants

I was in the Bristol Games Workshop today and the manager let me have a peek at the March White Dwarf which is due out this Friday (27th February).

Though I flicked through the mag, the main piece which I looked at was the article on Stompa variants.  One of the options you can have is a belly gun (which is something that Gargants have) which makes the mean Stompa even meaner!

If I had the money (and the time) I would love to have a horde of Stompas, though I expect I would also have to buy Simon some Shadowswords to compensate for them

Ork Stompa Photos

My local Games Workshop has the new Ork Stompa on display in their window and I managed to get a couple of photographs of it.

From Games Workshop at Cribbs Causeway

It is one BIG model, much bigger than the BaneBlade.

It certainly looks the part and (as with most models) looks a lot better in the flesh than in the photographs.

They were taking pre-orders so I bought some plastic gretchin!

On the counter, not finished or painted was the new Stormlord which did look very mean and nasty, well it would with twin linked 15 dice Vulcan Mega Bolter!
