Flintloque Orc Dragoons

These are a couple of my Flintloque Orc Dragoons that I painted back in the 1990s.

It was my first real success at painting red. I found that red wouldn’t cover the black undecoat, what I did differently this time was to use a dark brown basecoat before painting the red. After this I would often use a different coloured basecoat to get good coverage.

I have to admit I now quite like using the (defunct) Citadel Foundation paints. Interested to try out the new Base paints that Games Workshop recently released to see how they work when painting.

Attacking the Dwarf City

Probably my favourite display game at GamesDay 2008 was the Dwarf City that was under attack by a sea borne Orc and Goblin army. The scenery was beautifully constructed, some amazing Venetian inspired buildings and bridges.

In previous blog posts (here, here, here and here) I posted some photographs of the Dwarf buildings. In this posting there are some photographs of the Orc sea vessels that were attacking the city.

The Orc boats were wooden attack boats that looked like the Orcs had just thrown them together.

There were many vessels that had landing craft abilities.

In the background of this photo, you can see a Dwarf Monitor steaming out to defend the city from attack. The Orc boat in the foreground has siege engines lashed to the deck.

Orc Objective

One of the nice things about going to GameDay is the wonderful scenery that can be found, not only on the demonstration games, but also in the display cabinets. These pieces of scenery are often used in White Dwarf battle reports, but at GamesDay you can give them a real close look.

This Orc scenic objective is a prime example from GamesDay 2006, you can see the effort and detail that has gone into what is a relatively simple piece of scenery, which in the end would have been a small part of a photograph of the battle report.

Orc Rogue Idol

There is a new release from Warhammer Forge, an Orc Rogue Idol.

Orc Rogue Idol

When greenskin tribes gather for war, foetid effigies depicting the Orc gods Gork and Mork will be constructed. Using rock, dung, old battle trophies and other detritus, these ‘statues’ are intended to bring the favour of Mork (or possibly Gork) to the Orcs and Goblins mustering in their shadow. Some are no more than a heap of stones or no larger than a chapel door, but when a Waaagh! is brewing they can grow to immense proportions, and become so infused with the greenskins’ lust for battle that they are roused into life and will lumber forth to crush and bludgeon the enemy.

If a Waaagh! is subsequently defeated, or the concentration of greenskin magic dissipates, the idol will lapse back into immobility. However, when a Storm of Magic rages across the Warhammer world these gigantic devotions to the greenskin gods may rise up again as a Rogue Idol, mindlessly attacking all in their way until the storm blows its course.

When I first saw this model, I wasn’t too sure, but the more I look at it, the more I like it.

I really like the modelling that has been done and the use of scenic materials to make it really look like it is just stones that are drawn together by magic.

Also the photographs don’t give real justice to the size of the thing! There is just one comparative photo which shows how big it actually is.

I am thinking about how or if I could use this in Warhammer 40K… hmmm! What do you think?

Orc Totem

Snakebitez Ork Boar Boyz

This week Games Workshop announced the release of some new Orc Boar Boyz for Warhammer Fantasy Battle.

Orc Boar Boyz are rough, tough and very determined. They ride into battle atop War boars – evil-minded creatures that will take every opportunity to maim, bite and kick the enemy of their Orc masters. Boar Boyz are the shock cavalry of an Orc and Goblin army, and they love nothing better that to gore, stamp and inflict damage on the enemy.

These are very nice looking plastic miniatures.

I can’t be the only Warhammer 40,000 Ork player looking at these new models and thinking time to add some Boar Boyz for my Feral Orks.

I have done this before with some other Warhammer Fantasy Orc Boar Riders.
