Forge World Newsletter #145

++++ MESSAGE BEGINS ++++

It’s been a little while since our last newsletter, over a month to tell the truth. April was a very busy month for Forge World and May is looking pretty much the same. We’ve got another two Games Days and a Conflict event to attend as well as send out all the hundreds of orders we are getting from all you lovely people.

In today’s issue of the Forge World Newsletter we have several new 40K models to show you that will be released in the next few weeks.

Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Solomon Lok

Solomon Lok is a veteran Inquisitor of the Ordo Xenos, the alien hunters. Lok leads the Imperium’s mission to investigate the reason behind the loss of astropathic communications from Beta Anphelion IV and the horrific battles that followed. See the new ‘Imperial Armour Volume 4 – The Anphelion Project’ book for more details. These two models are supremely detailed, even by our standards! Simon Egan, Mark Bedford and Will Hayes designed the models and have done a really great job to create an intensely characterful pair of figures that just beg to be added to everyone’s collection. Solomon Lok and his attendant servo-skull stenographer are available to pre-order right now and will start being shipped out in the order that we receive them from Tuesday May 30th onwards.

Tyranid Winged Rippers

With the imminent release of these little horrors, Tyranid commanders will soon have all the models they need available to them to make their entire armies horrendously fast moving. Now they can have ‘living shields’ of Winged Rippers fast enough to be able to stay in front of the rest of the army, dying to protect and preserve the bigger, nastier Tyranids. Modified from his original Rippers, designer Daniel Cockersell has made these into flying monsters much larger than an eagle and with a heck of a lot more teeth and claws too! The packs of three Winged Rippers are available to pre-order right now and will start being shipped out in the order that we receive them from Tuesday May 30th onwards.

Containment Field Generator and Pylons

Containment fields were used on Beta Anphelion IV to surround the Imperial installations and certain large expanses of the surrounding area. More commonly found behind the Imperial lines of combat, Containment Fields are used throughout the Imperium as high security enclosures and can be encountered almost anywhere there has been an Imperial presence in the last few millennia. Each pack contains one Containment Field Generator and four Pylons. Each Pylon is a little over three inches in height and so a line across a battlefield looks really cool. We have a set of rules that you can get from our ‘Downloads’ section of the Forge World website that will let you introduce the Containment Field Generator and Pylons into your games of Warhammer 40,000. This pack is available to pre-order right now and will start being shipped out in the order that we receive them from Tuesday May 30th onwards.

Tech Servitor

Mark Bedford designed this Tech Servitor with part of the story and one of the playable scenarios from ‘Imperial Armour Volume 4 – The Anphelion Project’ book in mind. Early in the conflict, a Tech Servitor had to jump-start a generator to re-start a containment field in the midst of a fire-fight, otherwise the Imperial forces were in grave danger of being completely overrun. I like how Mark has made this Servitor quite thin and wasted, obviously quite different from the slightly more commonly seen Combat Servitors. Very nice. The Tech Servitor is also available to pre-order right now and will start being shipped out in the order that we receive them from Tuesday May 30th onwards.

New Forgeworld Epic Thunderhawk and Arvus Lighter

At GamesDay France, amongst a whole lot of new models from Forgeworld, one person managed to capture some new Epic models from Forgeworld.

They are an Epic Thunderhawk and an Epic Aruvs Lighter.

I know I have been one of a few wondering if Forgeworld were giving up on Epic, but these splended new models show that Forgeworld still have Epic models for us.

I am not a fan of the Thunderhawk, so I am hoping that they do an Epic Thunderhawk Transporter which is a model I really do like.

Grey Knights Dreadnought

Another excellent birthday present, was a Grey Knights Dreadnought from Forgeworld.

This is a fantastically detailed model, with lots of engravings, purity seals.

The only thing missing are the arms?

Not sure whether to go for the Grey Knights arms, or make as Mortis version… Yes I know the fluff doesn’t support Grey Knights Mortis pattern dreadnoughts, but when have I ever been one for following fluff to the letter… oh me the heretic!

I am thinking about Lascannons for range and Autocannons for firepower. Any thoughts or suggestions, please add a comment.

The Mk IV from Forgeworld is a really nice model, and when you look at the new Venerable Dreadnought from the main Games Workshop, you wonder why they didn’t just copy the Forgeworld model. The GW model looks clunky and as though the venerable components were just stuck on, whereas with the Forgeworld model the detailing is part of the model.

There is also the matter of the “helmet” which on the Forgeworld model looks fine, but just looks “plain weird” on the new GW model.

If you have a choice, get the Forgeworld model everytime.

Before I think about painting I have taken a look at how others have painted their Grey Knights Dreadnoughts and there are some fantastic examples.

Forgeworld have a nice painted example on their website.

Beautifully painted as are most of the FW models and certainly very inspirational.

Agis Neugebauer has some beautfully painted Grey Knights on his website including this fantastic Dreadnought. Next to his (on the left) is the Games Workshop conversion as shown on the main GW site.

This is a winning Golden Demon entry with some nice pictures here.

This is a refreshing change from the silver of most Grey Knights.

As you can see there are some fantastic painters out there and some very inspirational models, hopefully I can achieve a result which is similar.

Warhammer Stable and Cottage

One of the key things you need to do with virtually all Forgeworld models is to give them a good wash.

When the Forgeworld models are cast, the mould is given a spray (I guess) of some kind of lubricant to allow the cast model to be released from the mould easily.

However the lubricant also acts as a barrier to paint, so as happened with previous models I (and others) have painted is that the paint flecks off.

Washing the model in water with a drop of washing up liquid should remove the lubricant.

Avoid using hot water as this could warp the resin (a useful tip if you need to warped resin back to its original shape).

Once washed the model is then ready for painting.

Warhammer Stable

Here is the painted model from Forge World.

I do like the models that Simon Harris has sculptured for Forge World and this is a nice model.

It comprises three components, the stable, the roof and a supporting beam.

It also comes with two wooden (plastic) wheels for adding to the model.

I also think it is very good value (compared to other Forge World models) as it only cost £20.00  and is quite big compared to say the Warhammer Cottage.

Warhammer Cottage

One of the purchases I made at GamesDay 2005 and then was hijacked by my wife for a Christmas present for me (!) was the Forge World Warhammer Cottage. Here is the painted model from Forge World.

I do like the models that Simon Harris has sculptured for Forge World and this is a nice model.

It comprises three components, the house and two roof parts.

I also think it is very good value (compared to other Forge World models) as it only cost £15.00 at the time of purchase.

Ork Aircraft Traktor and Launch Trolley

Ork Aircraft Traktor and Launch TrolleyOne of the gifts I got for a birthday was the Forgeworld Ork Aircraft Traktor and Launch Trolley.

One of the reasons I asked for it was not just because I have an Ork Fighter Bommer on the workbench but also as on the Forgeworld website it said:

Be warned, stock of this model is starting to run low!

I suspect this may be because a) no one is buying it and/or b) with the release of new Ork plastics at some point the plastic mould may be wearing out.

The model consists of the plastic Wartrakk and some resin pieces.

The resin pieces include wheels, the trailer, an arm, a fuel tank and the hook.

The Ork Aircraft Traktor is used to taxi Ork aircraft in position to launch, where it takes off discarding the launch trolley. the Aircraft Traktor also recovers landed Ork aircraft for refueling.

Forge World Newsletter #144

++++ MESSAGE BEGINS ++++

Today’s issue of the Forge World Newsletter features several new releases for the Red Scorpions Space Marine Chapter who feature throughout our new book, ‘Imperial Armour Volume 4 – The Anphelion Project’. I’ve popped in a link to the new book again in case anyone missed our last newsletter which shows the Red Scorpions’s colour scheme as will as several other example pages. I must admit, I really, REALLY like the colours and iconography of the Red Scorpions. Owen Rees has done a great job painting some Red Scorpions for us as you will see. That new Terminator special character is very tempting too. Now where’s my wallet..?
Thx,

Ewen Little,
Forge World.

New Special Character – Commander Culln of the Red Scorpions
Commander Carab Culln, Captain of the Red Scorpions 1st Company, led squads of Terminators to cleanse the Tyranid infestation from the research stations on Beta Anphelion IV. Commander Culln’s suit of Terminator armour has been artfully re-worked by artificers to display his and the Chapter’s heraldry on the battlefield. This fantastic model comes with a choice of two heads in each pack: A modified Terminator helmet, and the other, the bare head of Culln himself. The power sword that the Commander wields in his right hand is quite a fearsome size, measuring in at 25mm/1 inch long. Standing on its tip, it is level with the shoulders of a ‘normal’ Space Marine!

Red Scorpions Veteran Marines with Veteran Sergeant Haas
Fighting alongside the Terminators in elite units of their own and leading basic squads of Marines into battle were Red Scorpions Veteran Marines. Being a very traditional and conservative Chapter, the use of older marks of armour and weapons systems is more common within the ranks of the Red Scorpions than in some other Marine Chapters. This pack contains parts to upgrade ten plastic Marines into Red Scorpions Veterans wearing MkIV armour as well as the pieces to make another into Veteran Sergeant Haas, a survivor of the savage fighting recorded in ‘Imperial Armour Volume 4 – The Anphelion Project’.

Red Scorpions Shoulder Pads and Terminator Shoulder Pads
The perfect way to expand a force of Red Scorpions Marines is to upgrade squads of Marines or Terminators with these two new packs of detailed resin shoulder pads. The upgrade pack for Space Marines equipped with Power Armour has two each of five different designs of shoulder pad, ten in total, enough for a full-sized squad of Red Scorpions. The Terminator upgrade pack has five individually detailed shoulder pads displaying the Chapter iconography of the Red Scorpions and five shoulder pads bearing the Terminator badge of honour, the Crux Terminatus.

Red Scorpions Etched Brass Icons and Symbols
To decorate Dreadnoughts, Rhinos, Land Raiders and other vehicles, we have also made a sheet of etched brass Red Scorpions icons and symbols. As you can see from the picture of the Land Raider Owen Rees painted for us, these do a great job. As I’ve mentioned several times before, there are so many uses for these wonderful little symbols you will find yourself sticking them almost anywhere.

Imperial Armour Volume 4 – The Anphelion Project
When Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Solomon Lok receives orders to investigate the loss of astropathic communications from a moon in the Anphelion system, he begins a journey into darkness, horror and treachery. Assisted by Space Marines of the Red Scorpions Chapter, Elysian Drop Troops of Special Detachment D-99 and Guardsmen of the 266th Cadian Regiment, Lok’s forces are faced by mist enshrouded swamps and a deserted laboratory facility. Soon, Lok and his men encounter the horror of the laboratory’s escaped subjects – the Tyranids. Amongst the ammonia-swamps of Beta Anphelion IV and along the corridors of the Anphelion base, Lok must fight to recover the lab’s secret data and escape before being overrun by the Tyranids lurking outside. But even as Lok fights for his very survival, all is not as it seems within the ranks of the Ordo Xenos. Make no mistake; this is a dark and savage story.

I Want These New Models NOW! – Read On…
