Grey Knights MkIIb Land Raider

Grey Knights can use Land Raiders, when I first started putting this force together I knew that if I was going to get a Land Raider it would have to be the Forgeworld MkIIB Land Raider.

This is the Forgeworld display model.

I did get one in the end at GamesDay 2006.

As well as the plastic Land Raider parts you get the following resin pieces. These are the main sponsons and hull structures.

This is the rear plate and replacement exhausts.

These are the lascannon weapons.

Though you don’t get much in the way of instructions, but you do get doors.

Now I made a mistake, you get a set of doors and I (foolishly) asked them to replace the supplied eagle doors with Grey knight Land Raider doors. Now what I didn’t realise was that the side doors on the sponson are not the same size as the Land Raider doors, but are in fact the same size as Rhino side doors. So the Grey Knight doors are too big!

Mk IV Venerable Dreadnought

A MkIV Dreadnought which is part of Mike Sharpe's superb Space Wolves army, which was on show at GamesDay 2006.

It is part of Mike Sharpe’s Space Wolves army, which was on show at GamesDay 2006.

It is a Forgeworld model, the Citadel Venerable Dreadnought is awful as it basically consists of the plastic kit (which is nice) and then cover it in metal parts. It just looks like they are stuck on (which they are), whereas the Forgeworld model looks more “real” in comparison.

Space Wolves Space Marine Razorback

This is the Space Wolves Space Marine Razorback from part of Mike Sharpe’s superb Space Wolves army, which was on show at GamesDay 2006.

This is the Forgeworld version of the Razorback with the much bigger turret, which I much prefer over the plastic kit version that you get in the shops. As it is only £2 more now, I think the Forgeworld version is much better value for money.

Though you would get some spare parts with the plastic version…

This is the plastic version.

This is the Space Wolves Space Marine Razorback. Compare this to the Forgeworld version of the Razorback with the much bigger turret above, which I much prefer over the plastic kit version that you get in the shops. The problem I have is that the turret is really small.

Mark IIB Land Raider

This is the Mark IIB pre-heresey Land Raider.

It is part of Mike Sharpe’s superb Space Wolves army, which was on show at GamesDay 2006.

The model is available from Forgeworld and is a very nice kit. I have one but have not yet started it. It is based on the plastic Land Raider kit, and the model is very similar to the Epic Land Raider.

Sisters of Battle Repressor – Storm Troopers Transport

In a recent post I showed a picture of a Sisters of Battle Repressor from the Forgeworld Displays at GamesDay.

Sisters of Battle Repressor

I said “I do like this model and I am intending to get one to use with my Daemonhunters army as a transport for the Storm Troopers”.

Well Santa must have been listening as I got one for Christmas from my friend Simon (thanks mate).

I am well pleased.

It is a very nice model and you get the following bits of resin. A new hull top, a dozer blade and extra weapons.

The Forgeworld model above includes Sisters of Battle doors, but as I am going to make this a Inquisitorial Storm Trooper transport I may use some Inquisition doors or leave them as they are. I might leave them as they are, as I am thinking about adding some extra armour to the model, akin to the spaced armour, but made from mesh, a kind of anti-tank mesh that you see on armoured vehicles today or on German tanks during World War Two.

As well as the resin pieces you also get a complete Rhino kit (though the Repressor is also available as a conversion kit, though the conversion kits to me never seem such value for money).

The standard Rhino kit includes three sprues.

The second sprue.

The Imperial extras sprue.

As a result I will have some spare parts which will be probably used by my Orky boyz on a few conversions.

Forge World Newsletter #163

Aeronautica Imperialis, it’s finally here…

++++ MESSAGE BEGINS ++++

Hello again, and welcome to the latest issue of the Forge World Newsletter.

In today`s Forge World Newsletter we`ll be taking a closer look at our much anticipated new game, `Aeronautica Imperialis`. We`ve only talked a little bit about this over the Summer and Autumn as the author, Warwick Kinrade, and his team play-tested, play-tested again and play-tested even more. We ran some introduction games at Games Day UK back at the end of September and then we finished it all off and sent it away to the printers.

A lot of people have been looking forward to this for quite a while now, so let’s get in there.

Thx,

Ewen Little.
Forge World.

Aeronautica Imperialis – Aerial Combat in the 41st Millennium

`Aeronautica Imperialis` is a complete, stand-alone tabletop wargame for two or more players where you command aircraft of the Imperial Navy or one of its many alien enemies. You can play using all the existing Forge World Epic 40,000 aircraft range, with us working on additional brand-new aircraft models.

More on those in future newsletters…

All you’ll need to play the game is this rulebook, some Epic-scale aircraft with the special new bases shown below, dice, measuring tape and some space to play in!

What kind of game is `Aeronautica Imperialis`?

`Aeronautica Imperialis` is far more than just dog-fighting; there are bombing missions, intercept sorties, troop insertions and extractions, strike missions, as well as pure air-to-air, fighter-vs-fighter combat.

Of course there is lots of background information on each of the aircraft in this big book, as well as many colour profiles and ‘photos’ of them locked in deadly combat. Imperial Navy players will be able to fly missions using Thunderbolts, Lightnings, Marauders and Marauder Destroyers. Imperial Space Marines provide some heavy support with their huge Thunderhawk Gunships and Transporters while facing off against the fighters and bombers of the Tau, Eldar, Orks and Chaos.

`Aeronautica Imperialis` is a large format hardback book, the same page size as our big `Imperial Armour` books. Its 176 pages containing all the rules, aircraft datasheets, manoeuvre cards and scenarios needed to play the game so you can collect, paint and fight with entire squadrons of Forge World aircraft.

I’ve watched quite a few games and played a couple during play-testing and I really enjoyed it. Each of the different air fleets does have their own `character` and have to be used in quite different ways. Here`s a free piece of advice: Don’t let an Ork Fighta get up close behind you. Those things are vicious!

The Aeronautica Range of Models

The guys downstairs in the Forge World Studio have designed a new plastic `Aeronautica Imperialis` flying base for the aircraft to use in the game. It cleverly displays both firing and targeting arcs as well as keeping track of the speed and altitude by means of the little numbered wheels. Packs of these bases are available to buy separately for you to fit to flights of aircraft you already own. They are also included with packs of aircraft bought from the new `Aeronautica Imperialis` section of the Forge World online store.
There you will see for sale packs of all the existing range of Epic-scale aircraft complete with the new bases. Of course, each new aircraft release in the future will also have the special bases included.

500 Signed Copies Available!

The lovely great big rulebook ‘Aeronautica Imperialis`, the packs of special new bases and all the packs of Epic-scale aircraft with the new bases included, are all available to pre-order right now for release as soon as we come back to work after the New Year celebrations on January 2nd. As an added bonus, the first 500 pre-orders for `Aeronautica Imperialis` will be signed by Warwick Kinrade, the man responsible for creating this great game and the Imperial Armour range of books. If you want that signed copy, then place your order here right now!

Remember, if you place your pre-order before the beginning of January, orders of £100 and above receive free shipping!

Forge World Christmas Opening Hours

If you want to give us a call over the holiday period, please have a look at our amended opening hours first to make sure we are actually here! There shouldn’t be any problem getting in touch as Forge World is only closed on the `usual` holidays and at the weekends as normal.

And Finally…

Everybody at Forge World would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Forge World Newsletter #162

++++ MESSAGE BEGINS ++++

Hello again, and welcome to the latest issue of the Forge World Newsletter.

Hi everyone,

In this issue of the Forge World Newsletter there are several new models that we`ll be showcasing as well as news on their imminent release. What`s more, we also have news on the release of all the other shiny, new models we’ve been teasing you with these last few weeks: They are all available to pre-order right now! See below for details.

It`s been a while since we talked about `Aeronautica Imperialis`, our new aerial combat game. No further news this time except that the waiting will soon be over. Watch this space…

Thx,

Ewen Little.

Return of the Thudd Gun

Today, one of the most famous artillery pieces in the Warhammer 40,000 universe makes a welcome return to Imperial Guard armies: The Imperial Thudd Gun. Also known as the Quad-Launcher, the Thudd Gun is one of the lighter pieces of field artillery still in Imperial service and is essentially four mortars mounted on a towed carriage. The model itself is surprisingly large with four squat barrels out front and a huge breech assembly at the back. A big, heavy carriage similar to the Imperial Heavy Mortar released a few weeks ago supports the gun while a small shield covers the elevation mechanism and axle. A big `Well done!` to Will Hayes here: This is a real artillery piece. Big, ugly, heavy, and workman-like.

Thudd Gun

As massive users of artillery, the Death Korps of Krieg still field many batteries of Thudd Guns, sometimes grouping them together into much larger formations so as to completely devastate enemy positions prior to the inevitable overwhelming infantry assault. To aid in building the Heavy Support sections of your Death Korps army, almost everybody in the Forge World Studio have worked together and made a complete set of Death Korps Thudd Gun Crew which really are very nice.

If you don’t collect Death Korps of Krieg yet, (There are a few of you still futilely resisting. Give in now, it`s for the best.), I don’t think it would take very much work at all to convert plastic Cadian or Catachan heavy weapon crew or infantry to make your own, unique set of Thudd Gun crew.

Warwick has also kindly let us have a set of experimental rules for using Thudd Guns in Imperial Guard armies, these can be downloaded as a .pdf file here.

Chaos in Command

Three great little models here, Chaos Renegade Tank Crew. These chaps will fit neatly into the cupolas of ex-Imperial armoured vehicles as shown, and with four separate arms there is quite a bit of flexibility to create some characterful poses before you even consider mixing them with other arms and weapons from the FW and GW ranges of models.

Now I know that Mark Bedford has sculpted these models as Chaos Renegades, but take a closer look Imperial collectors. With just a hint of conversion, these guys would make absolutely wonderful Imperial tank crew that are a bit more `integrated` with their vehicle, or, with a bit more work, great looking infantry for either Chaos Renegade Militia or mechanically augmented Imperial troops.
Grr!! We have only made a few of these Chaos Renegade Militia upgrades and I really like each one. There is just so much you can do with these models my Eldar army is in danger of being neglected! <Sigh>, Perhaps I`ll just do both…

More Heavy Metal

Over the past few Forge World Newsletters both Alan and I have been teasing you with piccies and info on a couple of new Leman Russ variants: A modified Phaeton pattern and a modified Mars Alpha/Ryza pattern. Today though, we`ll be taking a closer look at the third in this growing range of Leman Russ variants. Please feast your eyes on the modified gloriousness of the Mars Alpha/Ryza pattern Vanquisher.

Mars Alpha/Ryza pattern Vanquisher.

Armed with the horribly powerful Vanquisher Cannon and a co-axial Heavy Stubber in the main turret, this modified Ryza pattern turret packs more punch at a greater range than most. I think this is my favourite Vanquisher variant with its heavily riveted main gun barrel and elegant Heavy Stubber stretching alongside. When combined with the modified Mars Alpha pattern hull, the whole vehicle looks far more balanced and `right` to me.

Shiny New Tank Upgrades

For all you people who want to convert your existing tanks we have some very nice add-on packs as used in the new Leman Russes above. Firstly there is a new Death Korps Tank Commander with Stubber which can be assembled either operating the gun or using a pair of binoculars. Very cool. Next there is a set of Leman Russ Filters & Air-Scrubbers that can easily be used to on Imperial vehicles fighting in harsh environments to protect both the crew and the vehicle itself, upgrading them to a similar standard as those used by the Death Korps of Krieg. And lastly we have a set of Leman Russ Trench Rails. These are used to help the massive vehicles cross trenches and ditches without toppling back in and as such will count as a `Rough Terrain Modification` in 40K game terms. I just think they look really cool on the back of a Leman Russ to tell the truth.

All three upgrades can be used to easily update existing vehicles such as Destroyer Tank Hunters, Thunderers etc into Death Korps of Krieg patterns.

Death Korps of Krieg – Grenadier Centaur Light Assault Carrier

The second variant on the Centaur chassis is also available to pre-order now. The Grenadier Centaur Light Assault Carrier can be assembled with or without the optional armoured roof, but it does look so good with it fitted to my mind. With two Heavy Stubbers, the Grenadier Centaur packs a mean punch as it crosses the battlefield with it’s cargo of grim-visaged Death Korps Grenadiers. As yet I don`t have any rules, experimental or otherwise, to share with you, but they’ll be in a future Forge World Newsletter as soon as I have them.

Death Korps of Krieg – Infantry Squad at Ease

To date, this is my favourite unit of Death Korps. Instead of the classic, aggressive pose of soldiers that we are all used to seeing, the Death Korps of Krieg – Infantry Squad at Ease feature a combination of bodies and arms that go together to create the most charismatic squad we`ve made despite being `at ease`. When I spoke to Daren Parrwood, the Forge World designer responsible for making this unit, he told me that all the arms are interchangeable between this squad and all the others! This means that there is a truly huge range of poses and options open to you when assembling a Death Korps infantry force. (Hmm? Collect three armies at once…?)

Release Dates and Pre-Order Information

Every last one of these new releases is available to pre-order now both online at the Forge World online store and over the phone via the number at the bottom of the page. They will start to be shipped out from Monday January 29th onwards. Remember, if you place your pre-order before the beginning of January, orders of £100 and above receive free shipping!

We expect some of these items are going to be very popular and we strongly advise ordering early if you want them as soon as possible after release. Also remember that Forge World do not charge for pre-orders until a couple of days before the release date!

Forge World Newsletter #161

nice new Death Korps of Krieg, standing at ease…

++++ MESSAGE BEGINS ++++

Hello again, and welcome to the latest issue of the Forge World Newsletter.

In this issue I`ve got lots of photos of one of the next Death Korps of Krieg infantry units, complete this time, not just individual figures. We also have a very, very late release. Something rather special, a bit of a surprise, and possibly a last minute purchase for Christmas. Take a look below.
Thx,

Ewen Little.
Forge World.

Available NOW! – Giant Bloodthirster Head

This model is big. Very BIG. I just measured the horns and it was 15 inches/380mm across and the complete head weighs about 6.5 pounds/3 kilos! We usually take photos of big models with another model next to it to help show the scale. You’ll all have seen Paul`s brave/foolhardy Empire Champion facing up to Daemons and Dragons in newsletters past. Strangely, this time he was nowhere to be seen! I was forced to stand in and take his place, trying to show how huge this magnificent piece of work actually is. Hopefully I have done him proud.

So who made such an imposing model? Who else other than the designer and sculptor of the original Forge World Warhammer and 40K Bloodthirster, Daniel Cockersell.

Daniel has faithfully re-created the hellish features of the Bloodthirster, greatest of Khorne’s servants, in even finer detail than before, with the model exuding the Blood God’s rage and never-ending thirst for blood.

It would take very little work on your part to mount the head of this beast on a suitable plaque or similar so it can be hung from the wall. A couple of screws through the mounting board into the back of the neck and you’re done. (I took a moment to think about it the other night after seeing the Bloodthirster head complete for the first time. I have a place on my hobby-room wall in mind already.)

We are starting to hand-cast the first Giant Bloodthirster Heads over the next day or two and we should have some ready for sending out, all being well, early next week. Any mail orders placed for one, (or more!) Giant Bloodthirster Heads for Christmas presents will have them shipped out by UPS Express or Royal Mail Special Delivery automatically at no extra cost. We know this is a bit last minute, but this model is more than a bit gorgeous, and if there is any chance whatsoever of getting it to you in time for Christmas, we’ll try our best!

Want one? Give myself, or any of the rest of the guys here, a quick call to check availability and where you are in the waiting list.

Preview – Death Korps of Krieg Infantry Squad at Ease

You may have seen some of this next unit of Death Korps of Krieg already. We took a few to a couple of shows we were working at last month and Alan showed a few figures from this forthcoming release in Newsletter #159 a few weeks ago. `Squad at Ease` are quite unusual in that they are just that! Gone are the more common `martial` poses that we are all used to, and in their place we have some models that are just crying out to be bought and painted, regardless of whether you have a Death Korps force or not.

Death Korps of Krieg Infantry Squad at Ease

The squad is made up of ten bodies with specially matched sets of arms and weapons, all of which combine to make a rather different and very characterful unit which would be perfectly at home either in dioramas or Golden Demon vignettes, or on the gaming table as part of a fighting force of Death Korps.

My own favourite in the set is the trooper fixing a combat blade to his lasgun.

The Death Korps of Krieg Infantry Squad at Ease set will be another of Forge World’s rapidly growing force of Death Korps due for release in January. They should be available to pre-order in the next few weeks so watch your inbox for more Forge World Newsletters!
