Wargames Atlantic Werewolves

On the cover of this month’s Miniature Wargames was a sprue of Wargames Atlantic Werewolves.

The Blood Cursed…the Fanged Ones…Nightpack…Lost Children of the Forest…whatever you call them the men and women who turn when the full moon shines are a scourge upon the Free Kingdoms. These half-man half-wolf beasts are both cunning and ferocious and once they pick up the scent of prey they are relentless. Villagers pray for the coming of the sun when the moon is full.

This is how the finished and painted versions look on the Wargames Atlantic website.

I like getting these free sprues on magazines as it gives you a chance to get an idea of what the models and quality are like from a manufacturer without initially spending money. Also, as with these werewolves you get a few models that would be ideal for a quick scenario idea.

These would be great for a weird world war scenario. It’s a full moon one night in 1940. A platoon of Home Guard are tasked with exploring strange lights and noises emanating from a deserted farmhouse. They are wondering if these are German spies, or even German paratroopers. However what they will be facing will be much worse, a band of werewolves.

Another idea for a scenario. During the Peninsular War the 95th Rifles are on the move to hunt down a French spy in a Spanish village. However unknown to them, the village is cursed and there is a full moon.

You get the idea.

Deredeo Pattern Dreadnought

These Deredeo pattern Dreadnoughts were in the displays at Warhammer World.

The Deredeo pattern Dreadnought is a dedicated heavy support frame, though it shares many core components and systems with the more general assault-based Contemptor class.

Initially deployed in limited numbers to each of the Legions due to difficulties in its manufacture, its durability and firepower saw demand for the Deredeo pattern dramatically increase after the outbreak of the Horus Heresy.

Land Raider Proteus

The Land Raider is regarded by many as the finest armoured fighting vehicle of its class in the Imperium’s arsenal, and is the mainstay battle tank of the Space Marine Legions.

It is a phenomenally powerful war machine, its multi-layered composite armour and reinforced hull all but impervious to even heavy weapons, being a sealed unit designed to resist enemy attack from any approach.

Intended to serve in almost any environment as both war machine and exploration vehicle, it can operate freely in war zones ranging from acid swamps to rad-deserts without any noticeable impediment to its performance, and can even operate in hard vacuum, ensuring there is no open battlefield on which its armoured wrath cannot be unleashed.

This is an Ultramarines Land Raider Proteus.

Those of us who have been playing Warhammer 40K since it was first released will recognise this model. It is of course a new version of the original Land Raider that was released back in 1987 following the release of the 1st edition of Warhammer 40,000, Rogue Trader. Forge World released a resin version a fair few years ago, and since then, a plastic version of the kit has been released as part of The Horus Heresy range.

Provisionally Prepared

Last month I wrote a post about the Citadel Limited Editions that I had seen at Warhammer World. I remember thinking that it was a pity that Games Workshop stopped producing miniatures like this.

Of course the reality is that now and again they do release similar models. We have seen the Red Gobbo festive release and today a lovely little diorama, Provisionally Prepared has gone on pre-order. It features two halflings, sorry abhuman Ratlings, hiding behind some ruins. One is a sniper and preparing to shoot, the other is preparing lunch.

Diminutive, keen-eyed and instinctively stealthy, the abhuman Ratlings serve the Astra Militarum primarily as outstanding snipers – they can take the head off a heretic with their rifles from over a mile away.

Get ready to celebrate with this incredibly detailed diorama showing two Ratling sniper specialists right in the middle of their two most important jobs – fighting and eating.

Thoroughly dug in behind a sturdy barricade, the sniper is shown taking cover and getting ready to shoot. Their colleague, meanwhile, prepares to reload both their bellies and their weaponry, equipped as they are with tasty sausages, a turkey, fresh drinks, grenades, and more, all within easy reach.

This is not a regular army model, this is an amusing scene that captures the essence of halflings in space. It so reminds me of the types of limited editions that we would see in the 1980s.

I really like this model, so I have pre-ordered it from my FLGS.

Legion Medusa

One of the heavy artillery units available to the Legiones Astartes is the Medusa, which carries a short ranged but extremely powerful siege mortar capable of breaching all but the thickest walls. When a breach has been secured, the Medusa will then rumble forwards to support the assault, levelling buildings with a single shell.

Sokar Pattern Stormbird

The Sokar pattern Stormbird is a dedicated attack lander.

It has served as a high-durability orbital assault craft, a mobile bastion and firebase which could land a Space Marine strike force and withstand heavy ground fire while its cargo or troops and war machines disembarked to press the attack.

One of the later patterns developed, the Sokar was the design precursor to the smaller Thunderhawk Gunship.

The Stormbird’s standard armament is four turret-mounted twin linked lascannon, three twin-linked heavy bolters, and a complement of six dreadstrike missiles.

It is also equipped with particularly dense composite armour plating, and is further protected by a series of void shield generators which it can extend to protect disembarking troops and war machines.

Its cavernous transport bays can hold 50 fully armed Space Marines.

Alternatively it can carry up to 5 Dreadnoughts, including the mighty Leviathan; Jump-pack equipped infantry; Rapier batteries; bikes; jetbikes; a Rhino armoured transport; or a mixed force of all of the above.

Deimos Pattern Predator

The Predator is perhaps the best known and most widespread variant of the basic Rhino chassis.

Augmented with superior armour and firepower, it entirely sacrifices the Rhino’s troop transport capacity in favour of ammunition and generators for its formidable weapon systems.
