Legio Custodes Ares Gunship

The Ares is a potent terror weapon, bypassing enemy armies as it blazes over their lines in the shadow of its eclipse shields. Using its immensely destructive Arachnus magna-blaze cannon against the monuments and edifices which an enemy culture hold most dear to their hearts, it strikes a decisive blow against their will to wage war.

This heavily-armed super-heavy gunship is ideal for taking out large targets such as monsters and vehicles, and even packs enough of punch to take down the void shields of Titans. It is protected by its eclipse shield, making it nigh-on impervious to return fire.

Known as the Legio Custodes during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy eras, the Adeptus Custodes, is the Imperial Adepta responsible for protecting the Imperial Palace and the physical body of the Emperor of Mankind, as well as serving as His most important emissaries, His companions, and the keepers of His many secrets.

Although the Tactical Dreadnought Armour project was conceived first and foremost for the use of the Legiones Astartes, it was inevitable given the success of Terminator armour that its principles could also be adapted for Legio Custodes use. The first pattern developed was what became known as Aquilon armour. Advancing yet further upon the Cataphractii Terminator armour patterns, the Aquilon pattern takes into account the enhanced physique of the Legio Custodes as being able to bear more weight and strain than even a Space Marine, and so is fitted with additional integrated power systems and capacitors which make up for some of the limitations of the origin pattern. This allows for the Cataphractii Terminator armour’s famous durability to be retained in the Aquilon pattern, but with a degree of speed and manoeuvrability the former lacks.

I do quite like the Romanesque or is it Bronze Age look of the Legio Custodes figures and vehicles.

Fewer than a handful of Telemon Dreadnoughts are to be found within the ranks of the Legio Custodes, each intended to stand sentinel over its charges no matter the forces brought against it. The honour of interment in one of the few existing Telemon sarcophagi is awarded to only the most celebrated warriors. Rare is the foe who can stand against the array of esoteric, hand-crafted weapons that grace its chassis or the ferocious will and warrior skill of the master Custodian interred within.

Legio Custodes Orion Assault Dropship

Created as a dedicated assault dropship for the Legio Custodes, the Orion can carry a full task force of the Emperor’s Talons into combat. Protected by frontal armour superior to that of the Legiones Astartes Thunderhawk Gunship, its Arachnus heavy blaze cannon and Lastrum bolt cannon can swiftly clear a landing zone of hostile infantry and armour with brutal efficiency, allowing the units within to deploy before it soars back into the sky to unleash death upon any foe who dares approach.

Often deployed in situations requiring the heaviest of weapons the Legio Custodes could bring to bear, the Caladius pattern Grav-Tank. Utilising technologies and systems derived not only from the Dark Age of Technology, but from developments made as a result of the Great Crusade’s two centuries of warfare, the Caladius was well-protected and highly manoeuvrable, perhaps the most powerful battleline armoured unit of its size in the Imperium’s forces.

The principal armament of the Caladius is the double-barrelled Iliastus accelerator cannon, an advanced weapon which was to become the precursor to the main weapon of the Legiones Astartes Sicaran Battle Tank. The Grav-Tank is also armed with a twin-linked Lastrum bolt cannon, exemplars of bolt-weapon technology whose bolt shells are customised mass-reactive heliothermic warheads, hand crafted by the artisan weaponsmiths of the Lastrum Core Clan on Terra.

Legio Custodes Pallas Grav-attack

Beautifully painted Legio Custodes Pallas Grav-attack on display at Warhammer World.

Designed as a high manoeuvrability hunter-killer, the Pallas Grav-attack is a rapid strike vehicle utilising advanced repulsor-lift technology. Filling a similar battlefield role to the various patterns of Land Speeder and Attack Speeder of the Legiones Astartes, the Pallas has superior agility, improved armour, inbuilt shielding technology, and more powerful weaponry in the form of its twin-linked Arachnus blaze cannon – an expertly engineered weapon that can successfully eliminate both infantry and armoured targets.

This multi-part resin kit contains the components necessary to assemble a Legio Custodes Orion Assault Dropship, a Lord of War choice for your Talons of the Emperor army. This is an especially dense example of a flyer – it’s not covered head to toe in bells and whistles, but certainly features enough weaponry to make it an incredibly efficient part of your arsenal. It features 2 Lastrum bolt cannon, turret-mounted on either side of the cockpit, 2 Spiculus bolt launchers with vent systems and 2 Arachnus heavy blaze cannon – the latter is complete with cooling systems, mounts, power supplies and fuel cells visible. Appropriate to its ability to carry units into the fray, it can be modelled with the rear open – within, walls and benches are visible, with a ramp attached to the rear for the troops within to descend.

Based upon the technology of the Coronus Grav-carrier, the smaller Caladius grav-tank is designed to utilise the firepower afforded by the heaviest elements of the Legio Custodes’ arsenal on a highly mobile, protected platform. Given the fusion of advanced systems and weapons, the Caladius is perhaps the most powerful battleline armoured unit of its size in the Imperium’s forces, utilising technologies and materials derived not only from the Dark Age of Technology, but from developments made as a result of the Great Crusade’s two centuries of warfare.

A particularly powerful variant was the ‘Caladius-Annihilator’ which featured an enhanced capacitor-fed Arachnus blaze cannon potent that is enough to pose a threat even to super-heavy armour.

Legio Custodes Coronus Grav-carrier

Armed with twin-linked Lastrum bolt cannon and Arachnus blaze cannon, the Coronus Grav-carrier is perhaps one of the most recognised vehicles used exclusively by the Legio Custodes. This heavily protected transport skimmer provides them with a degree of speed and agility unmatched by the grinding armour of others who fight in the name of the Emperor, allowing the Legio Custodes to deploy rapidly into a range of terrain whilst reducing the risk of being pinned down by enemy forces.

Principally used as a transport, the strikingly-designed Legio Custodes Coronus Grav-carrier served as the technological basis for the Pallas and Caladius grav-craft. While its primary function is transporting a unit of warriors into battle, its armaments – hull-mounted Lastrum bolt cannon and turret-mounted Arachnus blaze cannon – ensure that it is more than capable of mounting appropriately aggressive defenses.
