Thunderbolt on the Flightdeck

This diorama shows a flight crew preparing an Imperial Navy Thunderbolt fighter for battle.

The amazing Dave Andrews made this fantastic diorama for the Open category Golden Demon and it won Gold.

This was before the time of the Forge World Thunderbolt and even before Forge World!

It was full of lovely details such as this mobile generator.

The model Thunderbolt was based on the Epic miniature.

Very clever and simple idea which works really well.

Photographed at Warhammer World. More photographs of the flightdeck here and here.

“Original” Space Marine Whirlwind at Warhammer World

The Whirlwind is an Imperial artillery support vehicle based upon the Standard Template Construct (STC) Rhino armoured personnel carrier (APC) chassis that is now primarily used by the Space Marine Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes.

This is the kit version of the original Whirlwind artillery vehicle, based on the original Rhino kit. It was on display at Warhammer World.

It comprised a plastic Rhino kit and metal components.

The original Whirlwind was a conversion using a slottabase and plasticard for the rocket launcher. This was published in the September 1989 issues of White Dwarf, #117.

Whirlwind

The Rhino APC is perhaps the most common vehicle in the Imperium. As a basic design in the STC system, it exists in thousands of variants, each of which can be considered a vehicle in its own right. Each different design is much more than a simple conversion of the standard Rhino; every one fulfills a different role, and is impossible to better. The Whirlwind is just one of these designs.

Here are the instructions, just in case you want to build your own. Continue reading ““Original” Space Marine Whirlwind at Warhammer World”

Space Marine Chaplin on a bike

There was a Golden Demon winning Duel (from 2007) that was on display in Warhammer World. It comprises a Space Marine Chaplin on a bike fighting an Eldar Exodite on a giant lizard.

Space Marine Chaplin on a bike

The Exodites were a concept that had Eldar using giant lizards as mounts and large mounts for weapons (in a similar way to Elephants or Squiggoths). It was never taken further by Citadel, though some Epic concepts were sculptured and cast, but never went on sale. The concept proved popular with some and as a result there is a range of unofficial material on the web, and some lovely models such as this one.

The Bretonnian Joust

The Bretonnian Joust

I have always liked this jousting diorama, The Bretonnian Joust, by Dave Andrews which won the Open Competition in the 1996 Golden Demon awards. The level of detail is outstanding. There are hoof marks in the ground, created using clay. The manuscript on the back is handwritten.

Invading the land of the Lizardmen

The land of the Lizardmen is invaded by the Empire of Men. Tilean or Estalian Conquistadors attack a Slann temple, trying to free a captive.

This beautiful diorama was part of the displays at Warhammer World and is quite old, from the 1990s I think.

Arkanaut Ironclad

This Arkanaut Ironclad was on display at Warhammer World.

Arkanaut Ironclad
Arkanaut Ironclad

The Arkanaut Ironclad is the jewel in the crown of the Kharadron Overlords’ airfleets. It is a majestic airship that is bristling with weaponry. Its deep cargo holds can be laden with aether-gold or it can be loaded to the gunwales with Arkanaut Companies or Grundstok Thunderers.

The Ironclad is the largest vessel routinely seen in the Kharadron airfleets. It is clad in layer upon layer of riveted iron plates, making it incredibly tough and protective. The Ironclad is armed with a fearsome array of weapons, including aether-shot carbines, bombs, and torpedoes. These weapons can pour astonishing amounts of firepower on anything that gets between the Kharadron Overlords and their bounty of aether-gold.

The Ironclad is a formidable warship that is feared by its enemies. It is a symbol of the Kharadron Overlords’ technological prowess and their mastery of the skies.

Arkanaut Frigate

These Arkanaut Frigates were on display at Warhammer World.

Arkanaut Frigate

The Arkanaut Frigate is a versatile airship that represents centuries of refinement by the shipwrights of the Endrineers Guild. It is a balance of speed, transport capacity, and firepower, making it a mainstay of the Kharadron Overlords’ airfleets.

The frigate’s sleek hull is made of Aether-Khemist-treated gromril, making it both strong and light. This allows it to reach speeds of up to 150 knots, while still being able to carry a significant amount of cargo and troops. It is also fast and powerful enough to escape the gravitational drag of a density hole.

The frigate’s buoyancy endrin is powered by Aether-gold, and it allows the ship to stay aloft even in the most turbulent conditions. This makes it ideal for long-range missions, as well as for operating in dangerous environments, such as those found in the Eightpoints. It retains enough firepower to level a city should the need arise.

The frigate’s main armament is a pair of sky cannons, which can fire explosive shells that can level a city block. It also carries a number of smaller weapons, such as aethershot carbines and boarding weapons. This gives the frigate the firepower it needs to take on a variety of targets, from enemy airships to ground forces.

The Arkanaut Frigate is a powerful and versatile airship that is essential to the Kharadron Overlords’ war effort. It is a symbol of their technological prowess and their mastery of the skies. It is a formidable warship that is feared by its enemies.
