Grey Knights Dreadnought

Another excellent birthday present, was a Grey Knights Dreadnought from Forgeworld.

This is a fantastically detailed model, with lots of engravings, purity seals.

The only thing missing are the arms?

Not sure whether to go for the Grey Knights arms, or make as Mortis version… Yes I know the fluff doesn’t support Grey Knights Mortis pattern dreadnoughts, but when have I ever been one for following fluff to the letter… oh me the heretic!

I am thinking about Lascannons for range and Autocannons for firepower. Any thoughts or suggestions, please add a comment.

The Mk IV from Forgeworld is a really nice model, and when you look at the new Venerable Dreadnought from the main Games Workshop, you wonder why they didn’t just copy the Forgeworld model. The GW model looks clunky and as though the venerable components were just stuck on, whereas with the Forgeworld model the detailing is part of the model.

There is also the matter of the “helmet” which on the Forgeworld model looks fine, but just looks “plain weird” on the new GW model.

If you have a choice, get the Forgeworld model everytime.

Before I think about painting I have taken a look at how others have painted their Grey Knights Dreadnoughts and there are some fantastic examples.

Forgeworld have a nice painted example on their website.

Beautifully painted as are most of the FW models and certainly very inspirational.

Agis Neugebauer has some beautfully painted Grey Knights on his website including this fantastic Dreadnought. Next to his (on the left) is the Games Workshop conversion as shown on the main GW site.

This is a winning Golden Demon entry with some nice pictures here.

This is a refreshing change from the silver of most Grey Knights.

As you can see there are some fantastic painters out there and some very inspirational models, hopefully I can achieve a result which is similar.

Warhammer Stable and Cottage

One of the key things you need to do with virtually all Forgeworld models is to give them a good wash.

When the Forgeworld models are cast, the mould is given a spray (I guess) of some kind of lubricant to allow the cast model to be released from the mould easily.

However the lubricant also acts as a barrier to paint, so as happened with previous models I (and others) have painted is that the paint flecks off.

Washing the model in water with a drop of washing up liquid should remove the lubricant.

Avoid using hot water as this could warp the resin (a useful tip if you need to warped resin back to its original shape).

Once washed the model is then ready for painting.

Warhammer Stable

Here is the painted model from Forge World.

I do like the models that Simon Harris has sculptured for Forge World and this is a nice model.

It comprises three components, the stable, the roof and a supporting beam.

It also comes with two wooden (plastic) wheels for adding to the model.

I also think it is very good value (compared to other Forge World models) as it only cost £20.00  and is quite big compared to say the Warhammer Cottage.

Warhammer Cottage

One of the purchases I made at GamesDay 2005 and then was hijacked by my wife for a Christmas present for me (!) was the Forge World Warhammer Cottage. Here is the painted model from Forge World.

I do like the models that Simon Harris has sculptured for Forge World and this is a nice model.

It comprises three components, the house and two roof parts.

I also think it is very good value (compared to other Forge World models) as it only cost £15.00 at the time of purchase.

Ork Aircraft Traktor and Launch Trolley

Ork Aircraft Traktor and Launch TrolleyOne of the gifts I got for a birthday was the Forgeworld Ork Aircraft Traktor and Launch Trolley.

One of the reasons I asked for it was not just because I have an Ork Fighter Bommer on the workbench but also as on the Forgeworld website it said:

Be warned, stock of this model is starting to run low!

I suspect this may be because a) no one is buying it and/or b) with the release of new Ork plastics at some point the plastic mould may be wearing out.

The model consists of the plastic Wartrakk and some resin pieces.

The resin pieces include wheels, the trailer, an arm, a fuel tank and the hook.

The Ork Aircraft Traktor is used to taxi Ork aircraft in position to launch, where it takes off discarding the launch trolley. the Aircraft Traktor also recovers landed Ork aircraft for refueling.

Forge World Newsletter #144

++++ MESSAGE BEGINS ++++

Today’s issue of the Forge World Newsletter features several new releases for the Red Scorpions Space Marine Chapter who feature throughout our new book, ‘Imperial Armour Volume 4 – The Anphelion Project’. I’ve popped in a link to the new book again in case anyone missed our last newsletter which shows the Red Scorpions’s colour scheme as will as several other example pages. I must admit, I really, REALLY like the colours and iconography of the Red Scorpions. Owen Rees has done a great job painting some Red Scorpions for us as you will see. That new Terminator special character is very tempting too. Now where’s my wallet..?
Thx,

Ewen Little,
Forge World.

New Special Character – Commander Culln of the Red Scorpions
Commander Carab Culln, Captain of the Red Scorpions 1st Company, led squads of Terminators to cleanse the Tyranid infestation from the research stations on Beta Anphelion IV. Commander Culln’s suit of Terminator armour has been artfully re-worked by artificers to display his and the Chapter’s heraldry on the battlefield. This fantastic model comes with a choice of two heads in each pack: A modified Terminator helmet, and the other, the bare head of Culln himself. The power sword that the Commander wields in his right hand is quite a fearsome size, measuring in at 25mm/1 inch long. Standing on its tip, it is level with the shoulders of a ‘normal’ Space Marine!

Red Scorpions Veteran Marines with Veteran Sergeant Haas
Fighting alongside the Terminators in elite units of their own and leading basic squads of Marines into battle were Red Scorpions Veteran Marines. Being a very traditional and conservative Chapter, the use of older marks of armour and weapons systems is more common within the ranks of the Red Scorpions than in some other Marine Chapters. This pack contains parts to upgrade ten plastic Marines into Red Scorpions Veterans wearing MkIV armour as well as the pieces to make another into Veteran Sergeant Haas, a survivor of the savage fighting recorded in ‘Imperial Armour Volume 4 – The Anphelion Project’.

Red Scorpions Shoulder Pads and Terminator Shoulder Pads
The perfect way to expand a force of Red Scorpions Marines is to upgrade squads of Marines or Terminators with these two new packs of detailed resin shoulder pads. The upgrade pack for Space Marines equipped with Power Armour has two each of five different designs of shoulder pad, ten in total, enough for a full-sized squad of Red Scorpions. The Terminator upgrade pack has five individually detailed shoulder pads displaying the Chapter iconography of the Red Scorpions and five shoulder pads bearing the Terminator badge of honour, the Crux Terminatus.

Red Scorpions Etched Brass Icons and Symbols
To decorate Dreadnoughts, Rhinos, Land Raiders and other vehicles, we have also made a sheet of etched brass Red Scorpions icons and symbols. As you can see from the picture of the Land Raider Owen Rees painted for us, these do a great job. As I’ve mentioned several times before, there are so many uses for these wonderful little symbols you will find yourself sticking them almost anywhere.

Imperial Armour Volume 4 – The Anphelion Project
When Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Solomon Lok receives orders to investigate the loss of astropathic communications from a moon in the Anphelion system, he begins a journey into darkness, horror and treachery. Assisted by Space Marines of the Red Scorpions Chapter, Elysian Drop Troops of Special Detachment D-99 and Guardsmen of the 266th Cadian Regiment, Lok’s forces are faced by mist enshrouded swamps and a deserted laboratory facility. Soon, Lok and his men encounter the horror of the laboratory’s escaped subjects – the Tyranids. Amongst the ammonia-swamps of Beta Anphelion IV and along the corridors of the Anphelion base, Lok must fight to recover the lab’s secret data and escape before being overrun by the Tyranids lurking outside. But even as Lok fights for his very survival, all is not as it seems within the ranks of the Ordo Xenos. Make no mistake; this is a dark and savage story.

I Want These New Models NOW! – Read On…

Forgeworld Newsletter #143

++++ MESSAGE BEGINS ++++

Today’s issue of the Forge World newsletter is dedicated to the imminent release of the latest Imperial Armour book. I’ll try to give you an idea of what to expect inside, and show you a few page spreads too.
Thx,

Forge World.

Imperial Armour Volume 4 – The Anphelion Project (Plot)

Inside this 176 page large format hardback book you’ll find details and information on the Tyranid creatures spawned by the Hive Mind and the fighting machines used by the Imperium. We’ve included background information, interior details, technical specifications, illustrations, colour schemes and rules for using all these monsters, creatures, vehicles and troop types in the special scenarios within the book and in other games of Warhammer 40,000.

The book uses lots of colour and black and white pictures, full colour Imperial vehicle and Tyranid creature profiles, technical drawings plus organisation charts and scenarios. There is also an army list for the Elysian Drop Troop veterans of Special Detachment D-99, new background and rules for the Red Scorpions Space Marine Chapter and details on Inquisitor Lok and his retinue. In the next few Forge World Newsletters we will be showing you a whole pile of new models that can be used for re-creating the savage encounters between the Tyranids and the Imperial forces. Believe me; some of these are just GORGEOUS!

Forgeworld Newsletter #142

++++ MESSAGE BEGINS ++++

It’s time for another issue of the Forge World Newsletter. In this edition we have some new Cadian models to show you, another variant on the deadly Broadside battlesuit and some great new Black Templars Rhino and Land Raider door sets as well.
Thx,

Ewen Little,
Forge World.

New Cadian Special Weapons

Carrying on from our recent Cadian infantry releases, we have two more great new Cadian figures to show you. Mark Bedford has made a model of a Respirator equipped Cadian with Plasma Gun and another armed with a Meltagun. This pack of two models will come as complete multi-part models with separate legs, torsos, heads, backpacks and accessories such as pouches etc. Of course, these new models are perfectly compatible with the rest of the Forge World and Games Workshop range of Cadians. I like these new heads Mark has made: They have a little flip-up monocular on the side of the helmet as an aid for targeting. I think they are really cool!

Tau Broadside with Plasma Rifles

Tau force commanders will soon be able to deploy the hitherto unavailable Broadside battlesuit variant, armed with twin-linked plasma rifles in place of the smart missile system. Will Hayes just finished work on this yesterday, so web-guy Paul grabbed it to photograph and get it into the newsletter at the last possible moment. The model uses almost all the components from Will’s original Broadside released last November, of course adding in two nice shoulder-mounted plasma rifles and a great new head.

New Black Templars Rhino and Land Raider doors

With the release of Codex Black Templars fresh in a lot of peoples’ minds, our original plan was to make sets of Veteran Black Templars doors for both Rhinos and Land Raiders. These stalwart warriors deserve that little bit extra ornamentation to raise them above their battle brothers and their vehicles should be no exception. These two new sets of doors do that quite magnificently with large, beautifully crafted icons proudly on display for all to see. There is of course no reason not to use these new door sets to adorn the vehicles for ‘normal’ squads within your Black Templars army if you’d rather. Together with the existing sets of Black Templars Rhino and Land Raider doors, these new sets allow even more ways of super-detailing and personalising your fighting force.

Forgeworld Newsletter #141

++++ MESSAGE BEGINS ++++

In today’s issue of the Forge World Newsletter we have a few new Elysian Drop Troop releases and some really neat upgrades for Black Templars Space Marines to show you too. We are pulling together the last few loose ends for Games Day Atlanta which is only a few weeks away, as well as starting work on Games Day France and Games Day Los Angeles a few weeks later.

Elysian Hardened Veterans

A few weeks ago we released a Cadian veteran upgrade pack with some really neat new shotguns. This new pack of Elysian Hardened Veterans also have combat shotguns that I think are equally cool! This complete multi-part resin five-man unit comes with four large calibre pump-action shotguns that feature a sliding collapsible stock: Perfect for close quarter battles when bulky weapons can quickly become a liability. Backing the rest of the unit up with some heavier firepower is the fifth member of the team who is equipped with a bipod mounted Meltagun. And of course this new unit is available with or without Grav Chutes; the choice is up to you.

Elysian Hardened Veterans

Elysian Scanner & Lascutters

The military issue Lascutter is used for cutting through bulkheads and sealed doorways, allowing Imperial troops to get into areas which might not be otherwise easily accessible and outmanoeuvre their enemy. It can also be used to devastating effect in close combat against immobile vehicles and bunkers. All this makes the Lascutter perfect for Elysian Drop Troop forces which rely on speed and manoeuvrability to bring their limited firepower to bear on their foes. The Elysians can also now be equipped with the Accatran pattern Long-Range Ground Scanner. These are larger and more powerful versions of the hand-held scanners used by some Imperial Guard officers. The Accatran Scanner can provide a wide array of useful data on enemy movements and locations to the Elysian commander which can then be quickly communicated to the rest of the force via the vox-network. Full rules for using Lascutters and the Long Range Ground Scanner will be available fairly soon in our next big book, Imperial Armour Volume 4 – The Anphelion Project. All four Elysians in the pack are supplied with ‘normal’ helmeted heads, but we also include four of the new style heads with respirators too. Both of the heads for the scanner crewman are a little bit different to the rest of the unit as they heads incorporate a really neat flip-down data screen. Once more, this new unit is available for you to choose with or without Grav Chutes. /

Elysian Heads with Respirators

Again, a few weeks ago we released an upgrade pack of Cadian infantry equipped with Respirators. Imperial Guard units use Respirators when operating in environments containing gases or particulates that could be harmful or impair the fighting ability of the troops. A few likely examples are smoke filled buildings, noxious swamps or spore filled Tyranid Hives. This is a pack of twelve individual Elysian Respirator heads, eleven ‘normal’ and one special one for your vox-caster.

Black Templars Storm Shields

Back in White Dwarf issue 312, some pictures of Mark Bedford’s converted Black Templars Terminators aroused plenty of interest, with lots of requests for Forge World to make and release similar Storm Shields. Working together, Mark Bedford and Simon Egan have created a set of five different Black Templars Terminator Storm Shields even more ornate and characterful than Mark’s originals! These new Storm Shields attach to your Assault Terminators in the same way as the standard plastic shields you get in the box, but these are literally covered in purity seals and honour badges, all of which adds heaps of character to your elite unit.

Black Templars Terminator Shoulder Pads

To help enhance both your Terminator and Assault Terminator squads, Simon Egan recently finished work on a complete set of shoulder pads for the Black Templars. The set is made up of 5 left-hand pads, all bearing a beautifully detailed Crux Terminatus, and five individual right-hand pads that really are mini works of art. One thing I love is how Simon has aged each shoulder pad: Look carefully and you can see the scrapes and nicks that the armour has picked up during centuries of combating the enemies of Humanity.

Games Day Atlanta

As Dean mentioned in our last newsletter, Forge World will be in the USA on March 18th for Games Day Atlanta. If you want to be sure of getting exactly what you want, and don’t want to have to rush over to us as soon as the doors open, please think seriously about placing a reservation order with us.. We should have a few Games Day ‘specials’ available too. I’m trying to get hold of some of the Kroot Bird model that we had a few of at last year’s Games Day UK. I also hope to have some Epic 40,000 Multipart Space Marines and some 1/6th scale Laspistols too! /

Games Day Paris and Games Day Los Angeles

Forge World is also now able to start taking reservation orders for both Games Day Paris and Games Day Los Angeles.
